22 July 2016

Day 10: breakfast at the bakery - awesome caprese panini. Drove down Highway 1 to Monterey/Carmel by the sea. Carmel was beautiful- ritzy and high end. Scrambled to find somewhere to stay- super crowded/$$. Ended up 15 min away in Salinas @ Quality Inn. Community kinda sketchy. Lots of farming.
Day 9: brunch @ Working Bee- awesome potato skin hash + Swiss on wheat grilled cheese/fries. Rite-Aid for sunburn. Drove to Santa Barbara- drove out onto the pier. Followed he coast north. Windy road, but beautiful mountain/oceans. Glances at Big Sur. Felt effects of Forest fire? Pulled over to take pictures- crazy windy. Stayed in Atascodera at the Carlton Hotel- swanky. Cowboy town. Takeout from Sylvesters Burgers and from Mexican restaurant. Sunburn ouch!!!! zzzzzzzzz

Day 8: woke up, ate leftover pizza, headed to Santa Barbara. Drove through desert after desert after desert. Highlights: Mohave desert, solar farm, plants growing in middle of desert, 110 = temperature. Sketchy town bathroom break! Desert turned into orange groves. Passed Six Flags. Arrived at Best Western Plus in Carpenteria. Settled in and drove to Santa Barbara for dinner @ Sandbar- fish burrito and taco/enchilada. Took the back roads back to hotel and zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Sunburn ouch!!

Day 7: breakfast @ McDonald's, departed from Baldwin Beach kayaking at Lake Tahoe. Went up coast to Emerald Bay. Snacks and ice cream at the beach. Saw giant trees and Vikingsholm. Treacherous paddle back. Dinner at Blue dog pizza- Roma pizza and garlic chips. Drove through antelope hill to Yosemite but hotel was overbooked and ended up staying in juniper springs at juniper springs resort. Hard to find after dark. Sunburn ouch. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Day 6: breakfast in Truckee at Wild Cherries- awesome chocolate muffin / burrito. Snacks from Safeway. Tried Emerald Bay- lots of traffic. Went to Baldwin Beach- less people there. Waded and built a sandcastle. Ate at Artemis Mediterranean- had kibobs and pita. Stayed at Harrahs in South Lake Tahoe. Gambled $10 for 45 minutes & had Carvel Sunday. Long hot bath then zzzzzzz.

Day 5: Early breakfast at Cinnabon and Starbucks (inside hotel). Was going to try for a kayak tour, but not enough time. Ended up at Sand Harbor Beach about 10am. Stunningly gorgeous!! Took pictures, walked a bit. Tried to go swimming - very cold. Sunbathed on rocks. Ate at Mtn High Sandwich co and headed to Zephyr Cove to take a 2 hour paddleboat cruise to Emerald Bay. Sat inside. Gorgeous scenery! Checked in to North Star Ski Resort. Holy cow- it's huge. Stayed in a studio condo. Really hard bed. Dinner @steamers. Delicious calzones!!
Day 3: woke up. Whitney went out and ate at a Jewish Deli- diner and had okay potato pancakes. Scott joined and we then ate at Jack-in-the Box. Walked through union square to Britex fabrics. 4 story fabric store (!!!) and Scott was a trooper. After, we went in The Art of Shaving and Scott picked up some advice and beard cream. We darted in Macy's- holy cow. 8 stories complete with Cheesecake Factory, Starbucks, and Burger Bar right in the store! Booked it back to the hotel, checked out, rode Bart to airport, picked up rental car (almost heart attack at the cost of add-ons). Headed to Muir Woods (heavy traffic), crossed Golden Gate Bridge. Could not find anywhere close to park for Muir Woods, so drove to Mill Valley, stopped at Whole Foods. Drove through Sonoma's downtown. Saw many vineyards during the drive. Went to Napa and ate at Gotts Roadside (burgers and awesome onion rings/garlic fries) and briefly stopped in the oxbow market. Drove straight to Crowne Plaza Sacramento NE. Zzzzzz
Day 2: Day 2: explored the wharf area of the town. Scott wondered around a bit, saw Grace Cathedral and brought back Jack in the box caramel coffee- yum. Ate the eclair and tart- OH MY GOODNESS AMAZING!! Took the bus and after a long ride through Chinatown and Little Italy. Ate Tony's pizza napoleonata. Margareta pizza was pretty good- very busy. Grabbed gelato. Walked through Little Italy to Coit Tower down a ton of steps to the wharf/ embarcodero area. Hop-on/hop-off cruise was sold out, so we took a bay cruise. We saw Alcatraz, went under the Golden Gate Bridge, and went past treasure island. We ate dinner at a sushi place on Pier 39 with waterfront views and watched the rocket boat tour. Had some pretty good garlic noodles and fried tofu in broth. After, we went to a chocolate shop on Pier 39 and picked up truffles, chocolate covered Twinkie, and chocolate covered cinnamon gummy bears (!!!!). Scott highly recommends the Twinkie. It was getting cold and took the bus back.

Day 1: flight in from Atlanta. Rode BART, fought traffic and crashed in the hotel. Stayed at the Warwick San Fran. Very cute, stylish boutique hotel. Grabbed dinner at the Honey creperie. Hopped on Bart and took 16th st exit and headed to Mission district and grabbed salted caramel ice cream at Bi-Rite and a coconut tart and an eclair at Tartine.

Day 4: Pleasant morning. Golden Corral for breakfast/ lunch and started to Lake Tahoe. Stopped in Fulsom at REI. Crazy landscape- yellow grass mountains and blue sky. Stopped by Crystal Basin and lake- gorgeous. Beautiful drive. Arrived in Tahoe (finally). Checked into Harvey's / Harrahs. What a huge hotel and casino!! The room was very spacious and had a Great Lake view. Ate at Hardrock Cafe (inside hotel)- not a good experience. Crashed. Zzzzzzzz

Quick layover in Vegas after a tiring flight from Atlanta. After Vegas, it was just a hip, skip, and jump to land in San Francisco.
