Tom's trip to Hawaii

5 September 2016

Last few days in Oahu. We hiked Manoa Falls, dove the sea tiger, played with an octopus and did the two hour ATV tour of Kualoa Ranch including seeing the movie sites. Now we sadly have to go home. Waaaah!

2 September 2016

It's been a bit of a plan B trip. The hurricanes (Madeleine and Lester) have thrown a lot of weather at the Hawaiian Islands. We were going to go to Niihau today to go snorkeling but heavy waves west of Kauai would have made the channel between the two islands way too rough. So we spent the day cruising the Na Pali Coast instead. Aside from the literal family of people next to us vomiting for most of the journey (on the deck of the ship and later into red buckets the crew seemed to change out every 5 minutes) and the very bumpy ride over the heavy swells, we had a good day overall.

Yesterday we explored Kauai. We went to Waimea Canyon (The Grand Canyon of the Pacific) and then on to the Kalalau Lookout, where you can view the Na Pali Coast from above. Then we went to Wailua Falls, the famous falls from Fantasy Island. That would have been awesome if you can actually reasonably hike to them but it seems to get to them you need to jump a wall behind some fence to hike down some illegal sketchy trail. So we passed for now. We then went to view Kauai's blowhole, the Spouting Horn, before crashing at the very nice and very reasonably priced Sheraton Kauai in Poipu. Today we're heading out for a catamaran ride on the Na Pali Coast followed by snorkeling off the coast of Niihau, the forbidden island. Aloha!

Ok...so things have not been going exactly as planned. There's a category 3 hurricane now a few hundred miles off the coast of the Big Island. We won't be stopping in Kona tomorrow. So we got into Hilo and it was raining, pretty well. I've been in a helicopter before in thick clouds in the rain, and it's not exactly an enjoyable experience. So we called Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. The short of it is that we cancelled it. Otherwise we might have waited in Hilo all day for a flight that was cancelled anyway (all of the morning flights were already cancelled). And we drove to Volcanos National Park. Kilauea is active, but we were told by a couple coming from the "Lava Flow" at the end of the road that there wasn't anything to see because the park service had cordoned off the area of the flow. 9 mile round trip hike to nowhere? I'll pass. So we're headed back to the boat to see what the next few days bring with the 2 hurricanes currently heading toward the Hawaiian Islands.

Well...we were going to dive Molokini, but we kind of slept in. The good news was we got a room at the awesome Grand Wailea, which is now one of my favorite resorts. We walked on the beach, played in the ocean and laid by the pool. Very much felt like "a vacation."

28 August 2016

Maui -- Road to Hana. We went to the arboretum to see the rainbow eucalyptus. Stopped at Haena peninsula to watch the crashing waves. Then we went to the black sand beach. Then we found the "secret" red sand beach, though it is a trek to get to. It rained like crazy today and seemed like the road was going to wash out.

27 August 2016

Today we depart on the Pride of Americas Inter Island cruise. This will probably be my last big trip for awhile. We caught a glimpse of a rainbow after the safety briefing. Then headed for the gym to hit the machines before dinner.

26 August 2016

Day 2. Awesome hobie cat tour of Kaneohe bay, replete with trip to the sandbars and snorkeling over pristine reef. As well as multiple encounters with large Honus (sea turtles). Then we went up the shore all the way around to Waimea falls, though now it costs $16/person to walk up to them (my how things change). Also, they now require everyone swimming in the water to wear a life jacket. Now we're eating Thai shrimp at a shrimp truck in Haleiwa. Aloha!

25 August 2016

Day 1, drove around the East side of Oahu, my favorite drive. Walked on Waimanalo Beach.
