Tom and Steph's trip to Alaska

25 July 2016

Matanuska Glacier. Steph and I decided at the last minute to go ice climbing for our last day. It was amazing!!! What a great day. Our guides were very good and safe. Neither of us had ever done it before, but it was awesome! What a great end to a trip to Alaska!

Prince William Sound. We were supposed to go Flightseeing in Denali today. But the cloud cover made flights unsafe and our trip was cancelled. So we pushed our glacier cruise up by a day. More than half of the ship was Chinese tourists on group excursions. Luckily, the boat was not full. But the weather was a bit harsh, cold, rainy and at one point hailing. We made our way around the glaciers and through the prince William sound. We even saw a huge 200 foot tall building of ice calve off and into the water. Overall, it was a very good day in spite of the weather.

Katmai National Park. It takes 2 hours to fly here. It's only really open for the month of July for the salmon spawn. You have to take a 30 minute class on bears. You hike more than a mile to stand up on a platform at Brooks Falls. But then you get to spend an hour inside a postcard. We were super lucky in that there was no wait. 2 big male brown bears were there fishing today. And they both seemed to catch their fill.
Flying to Katmai and Brooks Camp
Alaska! Yesterday we went to Alyeska and ate at the seven glaciers restaurant. I had the Alaskan King Crab and Steph had the Halibut.
