Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) in 2-3 days

13 September 2012

Street food on blue chairs Do not leave Saigon without having tried the delicious yet ridiculously cheap streetfood! It is available everywhere - often you can spot the tiny blue chairs, Vietnamese people are used to sit on. Warning: Do only eat food that was boiled/cooked/baked in order to avoid stomach problems (see Safety Tips).
Ben Tre – My Tho Tour This amazing tour will take the whole day but it's well worth it. You will not only catch shrimp with your bare hands but also travel by boat and horse cart and see an alligator farm and many other exotic places. What is more you can make your own coconut candy and taste lots of traditional cuisine (included)!

Where to Party Head to LAVISH BAR in the city center - it's a great place to party and connect with young people from Vietnam! There is plenty of security around which is not really needed but at least you can feel safe there.
The Vietnam war from another perspective The War Remnants Museum is not a must, but if you have a spare hour or two you should not miss it. Located in the city center, it is easy to reach. Once you are there, you will quickly discover, that the story that is told here is very biased as it the perspective of the victorious North. Yet, or especially because of that, it is definitely worth a visit to broaden your perspective about the cruelty of this war and the political decisions behind it.
Colonial Buildings The French built not only a cathedral, but also a historical post office that is worth a visit - especially if you have seen enough temples (which u can find at every corner)...
Another great restaurant Quán Ngon Restaurant offers great Vietnamese cuisine in a classic French colonial style building (centrally located). You can choose between a buffet and ordering a la carte.
Binh Tay Market A traditional market where u can shop for cheap goods (handicraft, textiles, souvenirs) and get a feeling for the daily life in Saigon. Always remember to bargain for the price!
The Chu Chi Tunnels This famous place is knows as the worlds most bombed location - bomb craters (now filled with water) are still visible everywhere. The tour is really interesting - you can even go though some enlarged tunnels yourself to get a better impression! What is more, there is a possibility to shoot various rifles (such as the AK-47) as a tourist attraction! (The half day tour is recommended)
Best rooftop bar in Saigon Saigon Saigon bar has a truly stunning view over the city and great longdrinks and cocktails are served at the bar. (a bit pricey though) Great life music as well!
Best Restaurant / Finest Cuisine One you have tasted the exotic food (e.g. pigeon and frog) in this restaurant you will remember it for the rest of your life. It is a secret among the well to do people of Vietnam and has a great ambient as you can see on the picture.
Important Saftey Issues Only use cabs of the following companies if possible: Vinasun, Mailinh or Saigontourist Ever carry loose bags with you (such as camera bags) - motorbikers could try to snatch them (this happens regularly in Saigon!)
Ruby Star Hotel - The best location for a really low price Great location and okay rooms for a really low budget (max. 20$ per room per night). The view is really great as well if you stay on the upper floors. However, there is now safe, so do not bring any valuables with u if possible!
