Marken is a peninsula encircled by the Gouwzee and the Marker Lake. At present it is possible to visit Marken over land but until 1957 Marken was an isolated island. However the lowly elevated Marken often fell victim to the salt water of the Zuiderzee. Hence the inhabitants decided to build their houses on wharfs. It is a quaint fisherman village, one can see houses built on stilts. Who nowadays stroll through Marken could easily believe she is in the previous century. Inhabitants wearing traditional costumes, wooden houses on terps and poles and narrow alleys.
Zaanse Schans a picturesque windmill village. Visited a working windmill -De Zaansche Molen. Climbed up a flight of wooden steps to get a great view of the surroundings. Really cold. My fingers are really numb from the cold. Had hot chocolate for 2 euros. Entrance to the toilet is 0.5 euros. Netherlands - low lands. Under the level of the sea. Wooden Clogs are very popular in Amsterdam. Various use and designs - decorated clogs to swear underlying love. Clogs made by willow wood.
2nd day in Amsterdam. Breakfast before going for tour.
