Theresa's tour through Bruges, Belgium

3 August 2018

Final wander and lunch before catching the train home.

2 August 2018

A lazy start today with a little boat trip along the canals and an exhibition showing the discovery of a world war two u-boat found in the Dover straights & how the Brits deliberately sunk boats in Zeebrugge harbour to stop the German u-boats from leaving Bruge. You learn something new every day. The final stop for the afternoon was a visit to the Chocolate museum, to discover its history and a bit of tasting.

After a taster, we just had to visit the Flanders Brewery, where we had a short tour and lunch. It was then time to get the culture fix with a visit to St Johns hospital and pharmacy which only closed down in 1976. The afternoon turned very hot, so decided to have a little siesta, helped on by a few glasses of the local beers. The evening meal wasn't the best, fighting the wasps and a waiter who huffed and puffed when we asked to move indoors! However, all ended well with free live music in one of the little squares and Kelvin  having apple pie and a beer for me.
Started the day with a free walking tour (he was so good we did tip him!). Learnt so much about the city and its history. Finished the tour in the basement of the Crown Plaza. Not such an odd thing as you may think. The remarkable restoration of the foundatipns ofchurch of Saint Donaas.  Then it was time for a coffee! Whoops the beer looked more appealing. 😂

Our home for 3 nights is converted commercial/ residential buildings full  of history. It was then time to explore the beautiful city, while the sun was still shinning and after refreshment it was a short stroll back along the canal.
Day 1 part 1 Phew we are off! Taxi picked us up at 7am, train due to leave Colchester at 7.30am. No surprise to the locals a problem on the line with a fatality at Chadwell Heath.  The question, would we make it to St Pancras by 10.15am to get our train to Bruges? Thankfully Greater Anglia pulled out all the stops and ordered a cab to take us all the way and arrived in plenty of time .
