Finola's & Steven's voyage in Sri Lanka

15 September 2017

Day 14: left the hotel at 5:30, we are very tired 😴 but excited to come back! see you soon, Luxembourg! ✌🏽

14 September 2017

Day 13: it's our last full day in Sri Lanka 😥 we headed out to Galle to fill our bags with souvenirs, and jumped on the train to Colombo in order to get closer to the airport. The hotel we are staying has a rooftop infinity pool.. So we're enjoying the last day to the fullest! Tomorrow we have to leave to hotel by 5:30 AM... wish us luck! ✌🏽

Day 12: we spent the morning at a place called jungle beach - and actually stumbled upon a couple of big lizards! Unfortunately, it rained throughout the entire afternoon, so we went to a 'turtle sanctuary' where we learned a lot about the difficult conditions they encounter 🐢🐢🐢

Day 11: After an estimated deserved 9+ hours long sleep, we went for a little day trip to Galle, the old Portuguese fort town. We now have seen 7 of the 8 UNESCO Heritage sites in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰- unfortunately the time and the weather will not allow us to visit the 8th and last site. Nevertheless, we are very content with our trip so far! As I write this update, we are having a lovely dinner on the beach 🌊

Day 10: we were up at 5:30 and immediately started our climb towards Little Adam's Peak. It was a fairly easy hike, although the temperature started spiking once the sun was out. We treated ourselves with a yummy breakfast with a view before heading to the bus stop - luckily, we found another couple willing to share the taxi costs all the way to Galle, our second last stop. It was a little more expensive but we split the travelling time in half (from 7 to 3,5 hours!). Greetings from the south side!✌🏽

Day 9: and what at day it was! We found a ruse to get seats on the incredibly busy train from Kandy to Ella, and we were ready to enjoy the 7 hour long absolutely stunning train ride through the mountains and the tea plantations. We then went for a little hike when we arrived at our destination. This was just a training session, as we are leaving the guesthouse at 5:30 tomorrow morning for a hike across the mountains. Greetings from Ella ✌🏽

9 September 2017

Day 8: Aaaaand we are back in the Culture Triangle! By visiting Kandy today, we finally completed the cultural trifecta and can head into the mountains with a good conscience! Tomorrow, we will be going to Ella, home of the world renowned tea plantations 🌱

Day 7: absolutely nothing happened today. We just hung out at the beach, went out for a little lunch and some delicious coconut water and relaxed. There's nothing to show for so I'm just gonna post a snorkeling photo from yesterday. Tomorrow we will be heading to Kandy, in order to have covered the entire Cultural Triangle!
Day 6: we are loving the "farniente" in Nilaveli! Woke up late, headed out to Pigeon Island and went snorkeling! We saw a myriad of tropical fish 🐟 and even had a couple encounters with sharks 🦈! No worries, we both still have all our limbs! Greetings from paradise ✌🏽☀️🌊

5 September 2017

Day 5: Anuradhapura has a LOT to offer, culturally. The hostel we stayed at, arranged for us to have a tuk-tuk drive us from temple to temple - we've now seen 4 out of the 8 UNESCO heritage sites in Sri Lanka. After a morning filled with sightseeing, we decided to take a break from the culture and head to Nilaveli (East Coast) for a well deserved three-night stay at a hotel on the beach 🌊 ✌🏽
Day 4: We're off to yet another early start (7AM)! We have to, in order to visit both Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura - two of the three pillars of the cultural triangle. Only problem, the two are a couple of hours apart from each other... no problem, the bus drivers are fearless chauffeurs and keep the pedal to the metal 🤘🏽

4 September 2017

Day 3, Part Two: we spent the whole afternoon doing a safari in the Kaudulla National Park with a French couple we met at the hotel. We got what we came for: we saw lots of elephants 🐘🐘🐘🐘
Day 3, Part one: woke up at 6:00, rented a car (with driver) an headed out to explore the "Cultural Triangle" of Sri Lanka. First stop: the 200m high Sigirita Rock with its beautiful caves. Second stop: the Dambulla cave temple with its 30+ meter golden Buddha Statue.

3 September 2017

Left the Hotel at 7:30, tried to see as much of Colombo as possible : National Museum, the Pettah, Sambodhi Chaitya, the Hanafi Mosque, Gangaramaya Temple and many more sights. Had lunch at a local place (we were the only people using cutlery) before starting the 5-hour bus ride to Habarana 🐘🐘🐘

2 September 2017

First night in Colombo after having spent 16 hours in planes and airports. The food is amazing 🍆 we're lucky with the weather ☀️ and haven't died in a Tuk-Tuk yet 🛵
