20 August 2017

Golden Temple Finished at the cave temples and followed the crowd down some more steps only to stumble across a giant gold Buddha. It just towered over the Buddhist museum that was in front of it. Absolutely over the top and massive but amazing. There was also a gold steeple and a long line of Monk statues walking along the top of the museum.
Dambulla Cave Temples Another 700 steps up. Much more challenging after doing Sigiriya in the morning πŸ˜‚ But again, totally worth the agonising muscle pain. Absolutely beautiful carvings and statues of Buddha. Received a blessing of protection from a monk. It was tied around my wrist while he chanted a section from something called 'Pirit'. Pirit is Buddhist chanting that blesses everyone listening with good health and long life.
Sigiriya Rock Got up at 6am to have breakfast and then hike up this monster. The Sigiriya Museum had a really pretty lotus pond at the entrance (foreigners only entrance of course). Saw a man carrying his child up to the top in a rucksack. He must be the fittest man alive. I was dying half way up, a sweaty mess with hair and sand stuck to my face and hands. But.. 2202 steps later, we made it to the top. The severe leg pain was worth it.

19 August 2017

Kaudulla National Park ELEPHANTS! Also our truck bent the axis to one of the wheels and then got a flat tyre so, nearly died in the wilderness but it's fine. Took the opportunity to get some great pictures of another amazing sunset.
Polonnaruwa Ruins Rented some bikes and cycled around the Polonnaruwa Ruins sites! The most impressive part was the Sleeping Buddha and the elephant carvings at the bottom of the steps to one of the temples.

17 August 2017

Kilonochchi Fieldtrip

14 August 2017

Project Prep! Space theme and underwater theme tomorrow! Took me three hours to cut out all the bits for decoration and stick down the other bits that didn't need decorating. So, so, so, SO tired now! Hope they go as planned πŸ˜‚

13 August 2017

Unawatuna Beach & Hotel Hammocks Had a yoga class this morning. Really enjoyed it, thinking of taking it up as a hobby! Walked back along the beach and returned to the hotel to lay in the hammock until the others returned. Tanned after 20 minutes πŸ‘πŸ½

12 August 2017

Hikkaduwa Tsumani Museum A very sad and horrible thing to see but important that people know what happened so things can be put in place to avoid such loss and damage after an unstoppable event like a Tsunami. The woman whose house the museum is in was clearly still so affected by what happened all those years ago. While explaining to us some of the details of the pictures and background stories she started to cry and had to excuse herself. She didn't force a payment from you or a donation the box was just there if you wanted to donate something. Maybe I'll come back one day and help those still affected by it, however I can. (Picture is a Tsunami Memorial Plaque and Statue)
Hikkaduwa Turtle Sanctuary Best day of my life getting to release these little fellas in to the ocean. Hopefully they live a long and full life and come back to that beach to lay their own eggs in the future. Amazing experience, and the beach was beautiful!

11 August 2017

Bedspace Guesthouse & Restaurant I went for dinner here on the first night and the food was so amazing I went back for lunch the next day! Dinner was a chicken skewer and a steak skewer with mint and cucumber sauce 😍 Lunch was a huge burger in some amazing flatbread with the best potato wedges chips I've ever tasted. 10/10 recommended
Kahuna Hotel SO CUTE. Didn't get to stay in one of the little huts but the hotel was so nice with a beautiful garden ft. Hammocks that's I used to sunbathe and a bed I napped on. 10 minute walk from the beach. Croissants for Breakfast £15 a night 😍
Weekend Three! Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa & Galle Ready to release some sea turtles and sunbathe πŸ•ΊπŸ½
Saree Shopping! Bought my Saree today ready for my conference. Who said I can't wear a black one?! πŸ˜‡

7 August 2017

Train home! Where the air con system was three fans stuck to the ceiling, two of which didn't even work πŸ˜‘ Train threw me about so much I thought I was going to fly out of the window at one point. Scenery was amazing though, maybe I got to see a tiny portion of the Ella-Kandy train after all.
Temple of the Tooth
Lankathilake Temple The views from this temple were amazing! There was a monk there who as soon as we walked in saw how tired and sweaty we were from walking up all the stairs and offered us water and told us to sit down and rest for a minute before going in. He must have seen how unfit I am from a distance πŸ˜‚ Walked in to the temple and was greeted with a huge statue of Buddha surrounded in beautiful paintings and gold and two other statues. A monk switched on a light and the room just lit up with gold everywhere. Said a little prayer for Mum and Granny everyone else that is no longer with me. I know Mum was watching me and thinking the same thing about how amazing the Temple and the views were.
Walking, Walking, Walking, More Walking! Walked for about an hour to find the next temple. Every corner we turned around there was another hill ☹️☹️ Walked through some beautiful rice fields though and found a post box and a very lonesome cow. Headed towards the sound of prayer song being played from the Temple.
Embekka Devalaya Temple So the Bus we were on was going the right way. The locals told us where to get off, haha! Temple wasn't very big and there wasn't much to see but the wood carvings were beautiful. All over the pillars holding it up and the ceiling as well. Dad would have loved it.
On the bus on the way to Embekka Temple (hopefully)

6 August 2017

Arrived in Kandy. Dropped off the other girls at their hostel. Tried to find our hotel. It doesn't exist πŸ˜‘ Driving around for an hour ringing places and trying to find the original booking. Ended up in this place called Majestic Tourist Hotel, their last room for 4 people how lucky! The view from our room and the rooftop restaurant was beautiful. It was definitely a lucky find!
Train home! The air con system was two fans on the ceiling, one of which didn't even work. The train threw me back and forth so much I thought I was going to fly out the window at one point. But I survived and got back just in time for curfew. And the views were pretty cool πŸ‘πŸ½
Worlds End! Attempted and failed. Was too hungover to move. The fog was too heavy to see. The rain was too harsh to survive in πŸ˜‚ Decided against the walk, some of them did it but their pictures were just covered in fog and rain. Maybe if I come back I can attempt it again. Got up at 4:30am for nothing πŸ˜‚ Drove to Nuwara Eliya afterwards for some food. Our drive stopped off at the amazing waterfall view with a wood carving shop next to it. Some more great pictures were taken and some more presents were bought!

5 August 2017

Adams Peak! Wow.
Tea themed lunch! Kept it nice and western with a burger and a cocktail πŸ•ΊπŸ½ Finished off with the most amazing strawberry and cream waffle I've ever eaten 😍
Rawana Waterfalls! MONKEYS! A whole family of them including babies at the side of the road and by the waterfall. I watched one steal some corn from a food stand and run away with it, very funny. So beautiful but the water was freezing! Not too bad because I was boiling hot but still a bit of a shock to the system πŸ˜‚ Only swam for a few minutes, it was busy with all the locals having a bath and a mini party up on one of the rocks πŸ˜‚
Ella - Tea Plantation Unfortunately didn't get to see any tea being made or walk through the tea fields as they had finished production for the day but I did buy myself some amazing smelling tea and, what a view!
Ella - Nine Arches Bridge What an amazing structure. There were huge wasps nest underneath all the arches which was cool to see. We stuck around at a little cafe and waited so we could see the train go past. We heard it before we saw it πŸ˜‚

1 August 2017

SLV's Got Talent SLV does not have talent πŸ˜‚ The show was really funny to watch and one girl that I know did an amazing Bollywood song, she was incredible. But the best part of the show was the dance party at the end. Watching everyone trying to dance in front of the one fan in the whole building was very entertaining.

30 July 2017

Jungle Trekking! Views were incredible. That's the Base Camp hotel poking out the side of the cliff there in that picture. Rock Sliding & Cliff Jumping was sooooo much fun! He last jump was so high but the footage from Natalie's GoPro is so funny. Only got to do one rock slide but it was so fun anyway.

29 July 2017

White Water Rafting was amazing today! No capsizing and no drownings so I'm calling it a success. I think it might have to be my new favourite sport. The walk there was really beautiful as well, some seriously good views.

28 July 2017

Jungle Weekend! Arrived at the Base Camp where we are staying for our Jungle Weekend today! The place has some really incredible views and it's so overgrown and proper Jungle looking, I love it! Saw a chameleon just hanging out on a tree trunk, and there were these huge snails stuck all over the place with the prettiest shells. Can't wait for White Water Rafting tomorrow!

27 July 2017

First day of exploring my homestay town, Maharagama. It's the most hectic and also amazing place I've ever been. No traffic system at all. Literally seen three traffic lights since I've been here, and nobody seems to watch them anyway. Had my first ride in a Tuk Tuk with four people in it. That was an experience πŸ˜‚ Found the best chocolate donuts in the country and a huge fruit market which was cool to walk around with Carley and Naya. Settling in a bit now, homestay crew still doesn't feel like family but I'm sure we'll warm up to each other πŸ€·πŸ½β€β™€οΈ

24 July 2017

Orientation! First day of 'official' training Learnt all about the different types of projects I am going to be working on. Got some time to swim in the hotel pool, which was amazing cause I was so. hot. Got given lunch and dinner as well. Daahl and noodles is now my new favourite thing in life πŸ•ΊπŸ½ Got the chance to learn some simple Sinhala as well which is coooooool. Can't wait to use the words 'Lassanai' & 'Hondai' 500x a day πŸ˜‚

23 July 2017

Arrived at the homestay today. Amma (mother) has already welcomed us with open arms in to her family. Cooked enough food to feed the 5000 πŸ˜‚ Rooms is small for five of us, single bed each, one bathroom, no hot water 😩 Guess I'll have to get used to no hot showers when I'm aching after the weekends!
Arrived safely! Homesick already but excited for what's ahead!
