Vacating in Valencia with Retrotrippers

2 October 2017

Final morning and just time to say cheerio to our wine lady an Dick up some Serrano jamon to bring home. After our 6 mile river walk we popped into Cafe Baron for a 3 course lunch €8.50! Another Sam recommendation. Last night was a wheeze. We had to drink all of our wine and beer then we found a lovely bar and we had to have a G&T. Our meal at El Refugio was excellent. Brilliant recommendation by Sam. The lamb, pork and Duck was outstanding. Topped off with cheese ice-cream with garamasala. We just had to op back to our bar for Glenlivet and Caros I brandy - what a measure!

More birthday pics. Watched a procession and loads of gums being fired celebrating ......??? Judy's birthday! Ha Now off for a birthday lunch
On the buses. Could be the name of this blog! We had a major tour of the city trying to get a bus to the beach. To be fair all the bus routes were hampered a protest march. We did have a great view of it from our balcony. We strolled the massive prom down at the beach and had a seafood pallets by he sea, as you should. Back to the bar for G&T and then we did a cheese and jambon olives etc dinner with wine on our balcony. Big day tomorrow!

Oh and yeah and chocolate for a night cap!
Up early this morning and down to the square for breakfast of croissant, jambon and cheese. We walked up to the market and what a market! The fresh fruit, fish and meats were second to none. Amazingly, the vendor on the jambon stall remembered Robert and Di from last year so we got special treatment. Bought loads of bits for pre-dinner drinks. Jumped on several buses to head off down to the Arts and Science quarter where we saw some amazing architecture. In 1957 the city's river flooded and the locals set about diverting it so it could never happen again. This meant the river bed could become a cycle and walking route and at one end the creation of the arts and science park. Had the local Valencia (alcoholic) water and iced coffee and a tour of the opera house. A circuitous route back on the bus, nibbles and a brilliant restaurant for dinner. This all concluded with obligatory dancing by Robert to a Spanish band of students. Think Dorito adverts! Coffee, brandy etc finished the night
After a busy week with Kath and Ian - family curry, Birmingham Symphony Hall to see Suzanne Vega - we met up with Rob and Di and Bill and San and climbed aboard the only Ryanair flight still operating! Off to Valencia to celebrate Judy's 60th! We wandered around like a bunch of old farts (which I guess we are) till we found our gaff! Air bnb. Amazingly Andy and Kieran met us in the square (nephew and niece) as part of their 3 month Euro tour. Fantastic to see them both! We had a few tapas and drinks before rolling into bed about 1am. Great views from our balcony situated right in the heart of the city.
