Holy cow! That was close! If this flight wasn't delayed, I would have missed it. 😮

A little celebration dinner last night to mark the end of our ride. Turning the bikes in today will be pretty bittersweet. I think we both have had our fill of riding for a while, but these bikes have been so good to us. It will be sad to say goodbye.

This is one my favorite features on this app. We reached the world's end. 🇨🇱🇦🇷🎉

Here are some not-so-great pics of PENGUINS!
Dad should have some good pics on his camera that hopefully we can get. And tomorrow we end up in Ushuaia, our southernmost city on this trek. El fin del mundo!

It's a Christmas miracle! My lips have never been so chapped in my entire life. It's been so windy everywhere for about the last week and and a half. I finally have something to help me. 🎅🏻🎄
Yesterday was a trek, but we made it to Punta Arenas for Christmas. The hotel clerk quoted us 170 USD for our room, but when we asked if he could do better, he told us to go to booking.com and book from there. Saved us $70 per night! So we're staying here for two days. We'll start our last leg tomorrow. El fin del mundo!

Stayed the night in Puerto Natales. Day tripped to Torres del Paine. Headed south now.

Dinner at Mi Viejo in El Calafate.

Yesterday we took an off day and stayed in town. Mount Fitz Roy towers behind Chaltén, so we took a short hike up the hill to see it. Chaltén is a great town. The hiking, backpacking, and climbing here attracts people from all over the world. After our hike, Dad smoked a Cuban cigar we found. And he said it was good. Score!
The food and wine here was amazing too. We had a great time. Now, on to El Calafate.

More beautiful mountains 🏔
This is a great town in Los glaciares national park. Looks like we'll be taking the day off tomorrow.

Quick check in because the wifi here is what the spaniards call el terrible. Made it into Argentina today. More pics later when the wifi is better.

Update: we made the ferry! We thought for sure they didn't have room, but at the last second they decided they did. We are much happier to be on this side of the lake.
Absolutely amazing ride today! Perfect roads, amazing weather, and breath taking views. There was a constant internal struggle to pull over every 5 km or to keep riding down the road winding through the mountains. We're now in puerto ibañez and will find out soon if we can take the ferry across the lake. If not, we'll probably stay the night here and attack the gravel road into Argentina. Hopefully they have room!

Today was the best riding yet! We thought that it was going to be a wet one again, but the rain stopped only a few km down the road. The sun even decided to shine on us today! It was beautiful! But what made this riding the most enjoyable was that the approx 160 km of the 250 we travelled today was paved! I hadn't realized how much I loved a good paved road until I had to ride over so much gravel, dirt, and rock. The non-paved road can really make for a squirly ride and the potholes don't feel too great either. We just into Puerto Aisén, which is a pretty good-sized town, and will be on the lookout for some dinner and maybe some vino tinto 🍷🍷🏍

Good ride today, even though it rained. We had some smooth paved road, and the dirt/gravel sections were not too bad. Rob's new waterproof boots are not, nor were Reed's. Maybe it was the creeks we had to cross. Rob's Playtex Living gloves over deerskin- poor man's waterproofing-didn't work so well either. Scenery beautiful though low clouds obscured the mountains. Countryside a mix of Louisiana, California and Montana. Very lush and green, ferns, grass, many rivers, glacial run off, mountains with snow. Sheep, goats, vaca, caballo; had to slow to avoid an ox-drawn cart and goat and vacas on the road. This section of the Carretera Austral is thinly populated. Beautiful.
Every town we've been in has had dogs everywhere. The weird thing is that they don't have leashes or collars. I assume that most of them have homes and that they just roam around the town all day but it's impossible for me to know for sure. It's so cool and weird. They seem happy and every so often they run out into the street and and bark at our bikes. That part we're not so fond of.
Of course the sun comes out after our ride when we get into town, but I'm not complaining.
Accommodations in La Junta. Basic, but the price is right: $28, including breakfast for two.
Lots of road work today. Slowly they're paving the Carretera Austral.
I'm not liking these clouds.

Not what I wanted to see
Day 2 was spent mostly on the ferry.
14 December 2015
Some highlights from Day one. Approx. 258 km or around 160 miles. More than half was not on nice paved road. We are tired!
13 December 2015
It rained a bunch today, but tomorrow looks good! And tomorrow we get the bikes!
Oso Yogui, mas intelegente que un oso corriente.
The osorno airport is so small, they only have 4 cab drivers. We were last to be picked up. In fact, the cab driver had to come back for us after his first fare. It's really a weird experience to be all by yourself at a "major" airport.
This elevator barely fit us and our stuff
Early hotel breakfast before we head to the airport. This was a great hotel. They really took good care of us. The coffee is a necessity this morning 😴☕️

Photos from la cebicheria last night. It was an incredible meal. Pisco sours, vino tinto, 4 different types of ceviche, Chilean sea bass, octopus, and more!
Yesterday, the ATM's computer crashed just as it was about to give me my money. What kind of crap is that?! I had to call and cancel it. I guess I'll have to stick to my credit card for the rest of the trip. 👎🏻
Breakfast on the patio. We're tired! Didn't sleep much on the plane at all. We're going to grab a quick nap and then see as much of the city that we can. Dinner tonight at La Mar, the cevicheria. 🐙🐟

About to board for Chile
7am, San Jose airport and tired. 3 hours until LAX.
