Out of office.... officially.

24 December 2016

Lucerne, Switzerland Merry Christmas Eve! We woke up this morning in our beautiful hotel and started with local donuts and coffee for breakfast. Yum! Jonathon wanted to check out Swiss watches while we were here, so we spent the afternoon looking at different watchmakers and brands. With a little Christmas shopping left we broke off and explored the city on our own while picking up fun little mementos and trinkets for each other. We also took today as an opportunity to get a little dolled up. Jonathon had a Swiss hair cut and I got a manicure. The language barrier from a Swiss Vietnamese lady was a bit tougher than I thought... and for the first time in almost a decade I walked out with Acrylic nails. Whoops. After calling our families, and tearing up a little, we made our way to our dinner reservation at a Swiss Cheese Raclette restaurant, where they famously use melted cheese all over your dish. We also realized you can drink on the streets here- what a way to end the day!

Zurich to Lucerne, Switzerland After sleeping in for the first time, we got up and decided to quickly drive the town before heading to Lucerne. Zurich seemed a little more magical at night, and we wanted more of a small town feel. Once we got to Lucerne we were starving so we parked and walked around looking for coffee and food. We found a cute Kaffee where we could grab some delicious snacks and explore while we ate. Since we didn't know much about Lucerne we drove around while figuring out which area we would like to stay. I fell in love with this grand hotel right on the water, which Jonathon reserved for us during our stay. It was so gorgeous, romantic and old- perfect for Lucerne. After prying me out of the hotel (I didn't want to leave) we took some espresso shots to wake up and hit the town. After walking around we found an adorable Swiss Fondue restaurant and had an authentic Swiss dinner. So. Much. Cheese. We couldn't finish it all!

Stuttgart, Germany to Zurich, Switzerland We started off the day taking a quick (and very very fast) drive on the Autobahn. Unfortunately our scratch didn't buff out, but luckily the rental place didn't say anything. (Phew!) Our drive to Switzerland was sprinkled with castles and churches which we admired along the way. We only stopped in a few towns since it was getting dark- my favorite of which was Tubingen. We are starting to realize some of the towns are beginning to run together in our heads. Once made it to the Swiss border, and had to get out to register our car. Much, much, much to my dismay they did not stamp our passports. I almost drew it in myself I was so upset. While driving to Zurich, Jonathon sees a sign that says Rheinfall and we decided to check it out. To our surprise it's Europes largest waterfall. (Or so it claims). It was beautiful! When we arrived in Zurich the whole town was covered in Christmas lights. Such a beautiful way to start our time in CH!

In the spirit of Stuttgart, Germany we started off our first day trading in our little mini car for a Porsche. This was a bucket list item for Jonathon, and it was amazing watching his excitement driving through the city. We spent the afternoon in the Porsche and Mercedes museums, learning about both the history of vehicles and Germany. After the museums we walked through Cannstatt and found a small local Christmasmarket. It was so cute, Christmas-y, and magical that I actually teared up (I'm embarrassing I know) When we came back to our car we noticed that someone had keyed/scratched the side of the Porsche. I guess we will deal with that tomorrow? 😑 We decided to eat some local sausages and saukerkeout and enjoy some more mulled wine. Afterwards we decided to attend the Welt Weihnachts Christmas Circus which was the largest circus in Europe. I'm pretty sure my excitement was so palpable that they upgraded our seats so we had front toe seats to all the animals and acts!

Now that we have landed in Germany I'd say we are particularly excited about different things... me, the small cities and Jonathon the exotic cars. Unfortunately, we quickly realized renting a car a few days before Christmas was harder than we imagined, and pretty much swept up the last (and smallest) car they had left. After throwing our embarrassingly huge luggage into our hilariously small car, we took off! A huge perk of driving through the German countryside is the ability to make quick (and several wrong) turns when chasing down castles and all the unexpected sights. With no real destination, we had freedom to explore. Some towns we came through were so small they didn't even accept any credit cards (😧). During our explorations we stopped in Frankfurt for lunch, which we loved, and then headed to Stuttgart where we are planning on staying the next two nights. On our walk to dinner tonight we stumbled on our first Christmas Market. #moremulledwineplease #weneedtolearnGerman

One 9 hour red-eye flight later, and a few currency exchanges, we turned in our swim suits and the beach for winter clothes and castles. Our European adventure has officially began!

14 December 2016

Closer to the Sun is a wrap! After a few days of awesome music, gorgeous weather, endless poolside drinks, patio hot tubs, and spotty service we concluded our time in Mexico happy, tan(ner) and ready for the next adventure!

What happens when you quit your job to travel? Well, you probably break your lease, pack all your stuff, ship your car and your dog (😫), and go! First stop.... Mexico! 🌮🍻☀️
