Neil's adventure in United States of America

21 October 2016

So this is it. At the airport ready to return home. Today we visited Plymouth, where it all began for the pilgrims. Went on the Mayflower II a replica of the original and also saw Plymouth Rock. Our final meal before returning home was Mexican at Sam Diego's. See y'all soon.

20 October 2016

Our penultimate day 😔 Caught the ferry over to Martha's Vineyard and visited Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs. No sign of Jaws! Especially enjoyed the latter with its Tabernacle (open air covered praise/singing area) and Gingerbread houses.

The bonus from driving 4 hours to get to our final hotel with only brief stops, was that we got to walk on the beach and paddle in the Atlantic Ocean then go see the sunset over Nantucket Island.
Long drive south to Cape Cod (North Falmouth) today. Had considered a longer drive to take in Connecticut and Rhode Island but it would have added at least 2 hours. Another warm day. We couldn't have asked for better. Sea view from our room 😎

18 October 2016

Enjoying afternoon tea and cakes in the hotel lounge. The hotel is modelled as an English experience. Lots of patterned carpets, settees and fireplaces. A day of 3 states as the town is just in Massachusetts and close to Vermont and New York states. Visited the local Clark institute (art gallery) which has several trails. Took a walk through colourful woodland 🍁🍂 Then a drive to see a few more covered bridges (my 2017 calendar of New England covered bridges, white churches and lighthouses will be available soon!!) Unbelievably the temperature hit 81 today. We've been in the only 'in case' T shirts we packed ☀️😅

17 October 2016

Drove south today. Just arrived in our boutique hotel. It was very warm today and colours stunning the further south we got - I think Stowe and Conway peaked the week before we came but certainly a lot more colour here. Visited Ben & Jerry's factory for a tour - we have an ice cream expert among us. Yummy sample at the end. Our room is rather grand - there are steps provided to get in bed!

16 October 2016

A gentler day today. Walked into Stowe to look at the shops etc. Then a short circular drive to take in a covered bridge and the Trapp family lodge and then a drive up to Smugglers notch, a mountain pass with overhanging trees with spectacular colours. Stopped for drinks at a ski resort and actually crossed the road in a free ski lift. Back to Stowe for a movie matinee (The girl on the train)

15 October 2016

Doh ray me. We've arrived in Stowe, Vermont, where the real life Von Trapp family settled. Another beautiful day, visited Mount Washington (highest mountain in New England) cog railway - not enough time to go up unfortunately (plus it was fully booked) then on to a very scenic town called Peacham with some postcard views

14 October 2016

Another spectacular day of blue skies and amazing fall colours, though it was decidedly cooler today in the mountains and forests. A day of covered bridges and hiking trails to waterfalls along the Kancamagus highway which follows the Swift river and climbs over 2500 feet. Stunning!

13 October 2016

Left the sea behind until the final days of our holiday. Headed west into the forests and mountains. First encounter with a covered bridge had to be abandoned as it was closed for repair. Moved on to Naples on Long Lake for snacks and finally found our first covered bridge to drive across. Colours of the trees are fabulous 🍁🍂

12 October 2016

A more relaxing day today. A nice leisurely walk to a lighthouse on the Kennebec river and a stop in Five Islands, Georgetown followed by a nice cuppa in Bath (City, though it's more UK town size)

11 October 2016

First leg of our road trip. Sad to leave Boston though. Headed north up the coast via Salem, Hampton Falls, Cape Neddick Nubble and Old Orchard Beach. Arrived at our hotel after dark but first impressions are good.

10 October 2016

Watching the Red Sox at the Hub Pub
More pictures from today. Beautiful sunset.
A much better day of weather. Sunny and blue skies. Lots of walking around Boston
A much better day in prospect

9 October 2016

The aftermath of last nights pizzas!
A bit wet and windy today in Boston courtesy of the tail end of Hurricane Matthew. Bagel brunch in Quincy Market and then a fun tour on the Trams
