One day in Paris! Luckily, this was our third trip so we had already seen most of the major tourist attractions. We stayed at an AirBnB in the Oberkampf district. Nothing touristy here, mostly working class. As in all of Paris, though, plenty of restaurants. We walked several miles from the flat to the cemetery, which is where many famous people are buried. It is without a doubt the largest cemetery I have ever been to.
Buried here are notables such as Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, and Oscar Wilde. Interesting, Jim Morrison’s grave was very plain compared to some of the huge monuments to others. Thousands of family crypts. Some were huge, the size of a small house. The statuary was amazing and it is the most beautiful cemetery I have ever visited. It was established about 1805, so in comparison to the history of Paris, not really that old.
Oscar Wilde’s grave marker was huge and ultra modern looking. There was a clear glass or acrylic barrier around it.
