Last morning in NYC in our little apartment on 110th Street
Walked to Brothers Cafe on 111th St for breakfast.
FYI get you eggs easy over not sunny side up. After that roockie mistake was a great last breakfast.
Packed our bags and got cab to JFK
Maria’s flight delayed, so 4 hrs amusing ourselves.
Zoe off to London to spend Xmas with Rachael and Lizzie, then onto Europe with Sam.
A great adventure for her after her hard work at Uni.
Maria home for Xmas with tears on departure.....
So happy to spend this time with you Zoe
Food glorious! A collection of food photos from the trip. Tapas, pizza, street van hotdog, the famous Luke’s Lobster roll, burgers, Virgil’s ribs and grits
Trip coming to an end. Last full day. Lower Manhattan and Financial district, more historical buildings and a beautiful gothic church and graveyard. Checked out TJ Max for a bit more shopping.
911 Memorial and Museum. A beautiful but eary tribute to a very tragic event. Met up with Zoe’s primary school friend Kate who had just arrived in NY and got to have dinner with her and her travelling friend Alice at Clinton Hall Bar where we all had a great burger and a good catch up.
We have had an awesome time. It’s a great city to visit, so much to see and do. 10 days just scratches the surface. Thanks for sharing it with me Zoe. I will treasure the time we had together forever.

Did another walking tour today. Soho/Little Italy and Chinatown. Very interesting hearing about immigration, architecture, restaurants and history if the area. Met a few characters on the way. The bakery has copyright to the ‘Cronut’ - croissant/donut.
Had lunch at a Chinese restaurant recommended by tour guide - amazing soup dumplings, sesame beef and fried rice.
Went to the MET - Metropolitan Museum of Art. Art and artefacts from many cultures over thousands of years. Interesting exhibition on Michelangelo which was good.
Dinner at a Tapas/Wine bar close to home.. the Lexington Social 103rd St, which was excellent, one of our memorable meals.
Heading to Wall St and 911 memorial tomorrow for our last full day here.

Headed to Macy’s to check out the biggest department store in the world. It was insane, so big, beautifully decorated for Xmas but made a purchase or two. Zoe got to try the ‘BIG’ piano made famous by Tom Hanks. Those of a younger generation may not recognise it sorry.
Empire State Building was as expected. Crowded but worth the wait for the views. Only spoilt by the bitterly cold winds.
The weather hasn’t stopped us from doing what we planned but getting a bit tired of the on/off jacket game!
Headed closer to home for dinner at East Harlem Bottling Co. 110th St. Happy hour Sangria, Mac n cheese and a great steak sandwich.
We are getting quite adventurous in our public transportation quests!! Today involved a different subway line to the one we have become accustomed to and then a bus ride ‘cross town. The system is very simple when you get used to it. So that took us to the start of our Circle Line cruise. A 1 hr trip down the Hudson Rr, around Statue of Liberty and back. Good views, very cold, and a very annoying, but quite informative tour guide/commentator who was a Donald Trump clone. Don’t know how he gets away with some of the things he said. We then headed south to join the Highline, a walk about the street using a old abandoned railway line. The first part was closed due to ice so we had to walk further along to join it. Lovely views of the streets.
We stopped in at the Chelsea Market for lunch and had some awesome tacos at Los Taco No 1

Broadway today. Finally got some tickets after much ado.
Aladdin was amazing! The costumes and set design was extraordinary and so well done. We really enjoyed the performance. Hung around Time Square after the matinee, bit of shopping then a drink a R lounge, Sangria’s again. Dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co - Forrest Gump themed restaurant. Cheap cocktails, ok food but we managed to impress the waitress with our Forrest Gump trivia knowledge!

A lazy start to the day after a late night last night. NY Knicks won in a very close and exciting game.
Was planning to do a cruise to see Statue of Liberty today, but with the forecast of snow we changed our plans. Headed to Grand Central station, beautifully preserved heritage features. Walked along 42nd street, stopped at the New York Library which was very ornate but very quiet and serene given the number of people there. By the time we got to Bryant Park, still on 42nd St, (Chrissy decorations, ice skating)
it was snowing!!! And continued to for several hours ❄️❄️❄️
Went Intrepid Sea ,Air and Space Museum to see a US submarine, aircraft carrier and space capsule. Very interesting but very American..
Finished the night with Ribs and grits at Virgil’s on 42nd St and our entertaining waiter Michael.

Woke this morning to -5 degrees and snowing!!! Very exciting and so beautiful.
Headed downtown to meet our walking tour across Brooklyn Bridge and then around Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. The sun came out but it remained very cold and we played the jacket on, jacket off game all day!
At end of the tour we succumb to the smell of pizza and enjoyed a Juliana’s Pizza - reportedly one of the best in NYC, and it was very good. Had a couple hours to kill so found a shopping centre to pass the time and stay warm.
Basketball game at the Barclay Centre in Brooklyn - New York Knicks v Brooklyn Nets. Lot of fun and a great atmosphere with it being a close game and the local derby. Got to have a sporting event hotdog and a Bud beer even if it did cost us US $44!

Busy day in the freezing cold! Some report it was -5 but not sure it was that cold. Felt like it at time though..Started the day with a visit to Tiffany for the all important birthday present purchase. Our pleasure to buy you something beautiful for your birthday. A beautiful store with very attentive staff. Cheaper purchases go to the 3rd floor!! Shame we didn’t book weeks ahead to have breakfast in the new Tiffany cafe.
We then went to MoMA- Museum of Mod Art for lunch and look around the gallery at various firms of ‘art’. Did see a couple of famous ones as well- Vincent van G, Monet.
Top of the Rock - spectacular at sunset. Thanks for the tip Alex. Freezing cold and windy but worth it. Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree and lights - lots of people, ice skaters, very christmasy, beautiful shop window displays.
Finally Time Square for quick look and dinner at Tonic, a sports bar with great burgers. Will check out Time Square more another night.

What a day! Overcast and cold but so warm in the buildings we were sweating. Hard to get the perfect combo.
Started the day with Starbucks coffee and bagel, then walked to the northern end of Central Park and got train to the Museum of Natural History. Worth seeing. Glad we went early as got very busy by the time we left. We then headed to the southern end of Central Park for a quick lunch at The Plaza Hotel food court and to meet our walking tour. We walked lower Central Park with Cliff our guide who was very enthusiastic and informative. Despite the weather and leafless trees it really was a beautiful place. Walked along Columbus Ave and had a Tapas dinner at UNO Chicago Bar

Well it’s been a long day. Almost 24hrs flying and multiple security checks which Maria managed to score a detailed check at all!!
Arrived at Airbnb at about 6.30. The place is small, but big enough for the two of us, clean and close to the Metro.
As it’s still Zoe’s 21st we planned to go a rooftop bar on 5th Ave. We decided to tackle the metro and found it really easy.
Befriended a group of girls in the lift to the bar...... Bunny the hairdresser from New Jersey and her daughters on a girls night out. They shouted us our first drink in New York for Zoe’s Birthday! Cosy and warm in the igloos but cold out. They provide red dressing gowns to wear while you wait for an igloo. Great view of Empire State Building lit up in green and gold! I’m sure it was just for us Aussies!
Bedtime now. Happy birthday again to Zoe!
