The Upper Rhine Graben, Germany 2018

15 June 2018

After a somewhat late awakening, me and Michael walked to the train station for the final time to meet up with the others ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŽ’ We took this 25 min route down the Planken high street across the Quadrate district, with the pretty Wasserturm (water tower) in the distance, every day ๐Ÿ› Danke schรถne und auf wiedersehen, Deutschland ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ’•

14 June 2018

From the swimming pool we walked over to the Schillerpark Irish Pub for a few pints before heading off for the train station ๐Ÿปโ˜˜
We reached the other swimming venue and went straight in for a cheap โ‚ฌ3 ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ After one pint, we all went in the pools. Funniest part had to be me shoving Michael down the slide ๐Ÿ˜‚ We spent almost three hours in there ๐Ÿคฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ
Turns out the place was closed for paintwork so we all squeezed into Pascal's car to change venues - even if Jordan had to go in the boot ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿš˜
After arriving in Landau this afternoon, we passed a couple of pretty, peaceful fields on the way to the swimming pool we planned to meet Pascal at ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐ŸŒ„

13 June 2018

Pascal dropped me, Michael and Henry near the other Irish pub in Landau, called Brannon's Pub ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿป We ordered a pint, only for when the others arrived, we had to quickly leave for the train station. This was due to us taking the later train would've meant a 5hr journey ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿšˆ
For dinner, the seven of us went next door to the cinema complex, where there was a restaurant downstairs called Delux. I had rumpsteak (because why not), with onions, rosemary potatoes and a side salad ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿ˜ Another surprise observation for Germany is that food portions are huge ๐Ÿฑ
We arrive in Landau again and the first thing we do is two rounds of bowling after meeting up with Pascal and his girlfriend, Sabrina ๐ŸŽณ I don't want to explain how the games went ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ‘Ž
To kill time before meeting the other two, we went to another shisha bar to relax โณ Far better than yesterday's that's for sure ๐Ÿ˜ They did a unique system of matching multiple flavours to a celebrity ๐Ÿค” Our choice was Beyoncรฉ ๐Ÿ˜†
Another sow-on badge for the collection ๐Ÿ‘Œ
A dark and rustic old bar restaurant, Zentrale three blocks east of Paradeplatz rustles up several pub favourites. Great-value daily specials, like the "Knuprige Spanferkelkeule frisch aus dem Ofen mit Bratenjus und buntem Kartoffelsalat" I just downright pointed at, cost around โ‚ฌ6 to โ‚ฌ9 ๐Ÿคค๐Ÿ’ฌ
Our final stop before having to call it a night was Rhodos, a student bar on the western edge of town ๐Ÿป We noticed a large group full of several Americans (who I'm guessing were exchange students) sat at the back. The bar was a different and a kind of nice vibe to be around ๐Ÿ˜
Our next stop as we walk over towards the opposite side of town is one with the craziest name ever, Nachtschwรคrmerboutique ๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿ’ฌ Very unique and funky, I just had the usual export beer ๐Ÿบ
With Minhee parting ways, the rest of us went to the second pub, another Irish pub called O'Reilly's โ˜˜๐Ÿบ It was cosy, a nice place for a group to hang out, and had really friendly staff ๐Ÿค— Most interesting part was all the different worldwide currency notes stuck to the back of the bar ๐Ÿ’ถ๐Ÿ’ด๐Ÿ’ต๐Ÿ’ท

12 June 2018

We quickly grabbed food down the street and I chose Yam Yam, a Thai restaurant and takeaway ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ I ordered saying the number "vier und fรผnfzig" (54), which was Pad Mie-Sua - noodles with chicken & veg ๐Ÿœ
The three of us met up with Jordan and Minhee in a bar lounge devoted to billiards ๐ŸŽฑ We had a drink to begin the pub crawl plus me and Michael started his bizarre Welsh version of round the clock darts ๐ŸŽฏ๐Ÿป
As it got dark outside, we killed some time by going to one shisha bar of the many options ๐Ÿ˜…๐ŸŒƒ A big habit of ours at university, we know when it's good or bad. It wasn't fantastic sadly - a little bit tasteless ๐Ÿ˜
For food, we decided to go to a sushi bar called Huang ๐ŸŽŒ In the heart of the Quadrate, it is a great dining choice, with their welcoming and relieving green tea as an introduction ๐Ÿต As someone who's been to Japan, their sushi is gorgeous and great value ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ—พ The mini boat full of sushi and sashimi that Michael ordered was crazy ๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ›ถ
Today me, Michael and Henry chilled in the flat for a while before heading out into town for food. We noticed a lot of buildings chucking out unneeded, random stuff: free for anyone to take ๐Ÿค” The other two dug in, thus we labelled it as "national garbage day" ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿšฎ
The nightclub we walked towards had seemingly shut down ๐Ÿ˜’ Cheers Google ๐Ÿ™ˆ So we went to a nearby bar and had some great laughs to make up for it ๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿป

11 June 2018

We got back to Mannheim and started the clichรฉ uni students pre-drinks on our accommodation balcony, whilst wearing all our daft clothes. Michael with his banderas and sunglasses stood out pretty clearly above the rest of us ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ•ถ
With the rain pouring down, we went across the road for food. We went to a traditional German restaurant called Lehner's Wirtshaus, where I finally had one of my all-time foodie favourites - schnitzel. The huge pork schnitzel they welcomingly served was excellent ๐Ÿฅ“๐ŸŸ
We walked to the local main shopping mall called Postgalerie and went into Primark to do our challenge: โ‚ฌ15 to buy embarrassing clothes for the person we got out of the hat ๐Ÿ›๐ŸŽฉ I got Pascal whilst Henry got me; funniest had to be Michael and Minhee though ๐Ÿ‘•๐Ÿ˜† As we were waiting for the others to do their thing in the mall, me and Michael both grabbed a snack of rindswurst from the hot dog van outside ๐ŸŒญ
After arriving in Karlsruhe, from the station we walked across the pretty zoological city park ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณโ›ฒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ ๐Ÿ“ธ: Michael Davies
Sadly when we got back to the flat, I dropped my phone on the hard bedroom floor and the screen stopped working ๐Ÿ“ต So pictures got a bit awkward from here onwards ๐Ÿ˜“
Jordan and Minhee left us but me, Michael and Henry surged on ๐Ÿ‘‰ A short walk around led us to Schinderhannes ๐Ÿบ A nice little traditional pub that thankfully had a fan ๐ŸŒฌ๐Ÿ˜Œ Free peanuts and crisps were a bonusโ—
The five of us went to this really cosy and cheap bar called Destille Nr. 13 ๐Ÿป It's surprising how relaxed the Germans are about smoking inside, with many forecasting the place in fog ๐Ÿšฌ We even started playing our usual card game called Mushroom, but with coasters ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ„ Great music too ! ๐ŸŽถ

10 June 2018

As we waited for our return train to arrive, I watched the others playing pool in the station social club - to our dissatisfaction that it was actually American billiards ๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸŽฑ
Plans changed earlier as Pascal suggested this German-style barbeque in a beer garden ๐ŸŒญ๐Ÿฝ Me and Michael ordered sausage and meat respectively and split them both between us. Both were gorgeous but in my opinion the sausage edged it ๐Ÿ˜‹
We stopped off for a drink of booze after walking around for a while under the sun โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿป
These flags are all over the town ๐Ÿด It's not hard to tell that the Germans are very proud of their coats of arms wherever it represents ๐Ÿฅ€
On our way through the townscape in the humid heat, we stopped at a local ice cream parlour ๐Ÿฆ The chocolate ice coffee shake I had wasn't bad ๐Ÿง
We arrived at Edenkoben station and went straight to a mini eatery across the road. All us four boys chose to eat the German favourite currywurst, originally from Berlin ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐ŸŒญ๐ŸŸ Pascal arrived soon after us too.
Jordan was happy us three were on time for the railway station, so I rewarded myself with a large buttered pretzel ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿž Today we're meeting Pascal in the village of Edenkoben for a forest walk ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ
We stopped off in Karlsruhe on the returning train journey, which seemingly dragged till about 2am ๐Ÿšˆ๐Ÿ˜ด Therefore, going to the nightclub in Mannheim became inadequate ๐Ÿ‘Ž

9 June 2018

Pascal walked us to an interesting Irish pub in the middle of the town's Schillerpark ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿบ We were there for a long time ๐Ÿ˜… Probably for the better as the rainfall got heavy ๐ŸŒฆ The games began. Funniest moment had to be Pascal having to prove he could handle 11 shots ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿป
Dirty river yet pretty architecture ๐Ÿ’ง
Pascal took us to this Punjabi Indian restaurant and to be fair, coming from a few of us who've lived in India, it was pretty nice ๐Ÿ› My first time having butter chicken for a long while ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ
โฌ…๏ธ The Protestant Christian church of Stiftskirche is a landmark of Landau in der Pfalz, and having lasted 675 years, it's the oldest church in the city ๐Ÿ•Žโ›ช
Me and Michael took each photo on this one street we thought was quite pretty ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒ Even if it did start spitting down a little ๐ŸŒง
We arrive in the town of Landau and I meet Jordan's friend Pascal, who went to the same school as us in Chennai but he left as I joined ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ
Captured this view behind Michael on the second train just outside Neustadt with vineyards and pretty moutainsides in the background โ›ฐ๐Ÿšˆโ›ฐ
I was quite impressed with my crappy German when buying this bottle of coke at the station ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ’ฌ I said "eine cola" smoothly and it costed โ‚ฌ2.05. I gave him โ‚ฌ5 but I heard him say "fรผnf cent" to make the change easier ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ’ถ
Me, Michael and Henry went into this cafรฉ called Prestige to meet Jordan and Minhee prior to a bit of shopping in Aldi across the road. An ice frappรฉ was a nice wake-up call ๐Ÿฅ›
After a long walk around the town, me, Michael and Henry found a bar to grab a quick chilled drink before the real drama starts tomorrow ๐Ÿบ
We reached our accommodation after a decent walk, some dodgy backstreets yet pretty high streets for the showing ๐Ÿฌ With Airbnb, there were a few issues at first but they got solved slowly yet surely ๐Ÿ›Œ

8 June 2018

With the high numbers of Turkish immigrants throughout Germany, donner kebab as takeaway is a must ! The dรถner box at Foodway XL by the station settled things nicely ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ˜
And we finally arrive in Mannheim !! ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช
We got off at our first stop within Frankfurt with another 1hr 20mins or so till we reach ๐Ÿ˜• Not the greatest start to things not gonna lie ๐Ÿ™ˆ
After a short but delayed 1hr 20min 1sec flight from Manchester, which was Michael's first, we landed in Frankfurt ๐Ÿ›ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช We missed our booked train but thankfully got put on the next ones ๐Ÿšˆ Jordan and Minhee left with Pascal by car so me, Michael and Henry had to take the railways to Mannheim ๐Ÿ˜’ A quick fake orange Pepsi and cheese & ham croissant was a necessity ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿฅ
