The Mavericks in Southern Africa

20 June 2017

No rush this morning. Left at around 9.30 heading for Mariental. We stopped in at Roadhouse Canyon, such a cool place with heaps of old cars. A very long and straight drive calling in at Naute Kristall where they have a craft distillery. We tasted everything and purchased the Gin. A sandwich stop on the roadside at Keetmanshoop then back on the road. We arrived at about 5.30 to find Nick and Amanda had paid for us to stay in rooms! What a treat 😊 Cooked steak and potatoes for dinner which we ate with a salad. We planned the next day to get to Windhoek where Nick and Rob want to do some quick oil changes etc. nick has a mate there so might take them up on the accommodation offer.

Left at a sensible hour and popped into Springbok to get a spare fuel filter, just in case. We passed through Nababeep and then continued up to the border of Namibia. Border crossing was totally painless so onto Ais-Ais. Namibia is. Miles and miles of nothing. Amazing piles of rock which look liked they've been mined! We made great time, so relaxed, eating meatloaf and salad. We camped at the springs and got a local sim so we can keep in touch with home. Very chilly in the evening, although very comfy in the roof top tent. I bought postcards to send to everyone in England.

Terrible nights sleep. Dogs barking and people shouting, not to mention Andrew's snoring 🙈 We left at 7.30. Lots of sightings on the road side of a blue cranes! We climbed the pass before Citrusdal where the views are phenomenal. We pit stopped at Klawer, where we bought some wine and wimpy breakfast/lunch. Headed on to Sprinkbok and a campsite found on google maps called Modderfontein. So awesome, quiet and such clean ablutions. Plenty of hot water. Men@work arrived, we all braaied together. A great evening! Ooh, did a couple of geocaches!

Registration day. We left at 9.30, found Jack Black Brewery, but as we were way to early we went to Muizenberg beach for a drink and a nibble. Arrived at registration at about 2.30pm. Applied all the stickers to the truck, looking so cool, then listened to the information and had burgers and a beer. I booked us a campsite just outside Cape Town at a place called Zonnekus. We had a few drinks around an attempt of a fire (wet wood)

We were on the road by 6.30am. Heading to Somerset West to stay with Aaron and Caroline. We callled in to George, had a sandwich on the road. Driving down Sir Louries pass is amazing! Arriving at about 5.30pm, but Rob ran out of fuel 400m from the house 😂 Mavericks to the rescue with 20L in a can and a siphon pipe! We had a lovely evening, awesome food and way too much wine! Luckily there's no need to rush in the morning as we are close to Cape Town and Put Foot registration.

Up early to get on the road at 6.30, oh dear not possible. Bit of a problem this morning with the electrics in the Landy! We had to go and find a new battery thinking that was the problem. Eventually Rob and Andrew realised it was a bad earth. They attached the jumper cables to the battery terminals and we were off again! As there were road works on the Queenstown road we decided to go via Matatile. passing through Kei river over the bridge, beautiful scenery and onto Grahamstown for sunset. Losing time this morning meant we would only make it to PE. Bron's brother lives there so we were able to get a place to stay. Rob and Bron took a wrong road and ended up an hour behind us, going via East London. We pulled into Hooters for a drink first. Arriving at Bron's brother and sister in laws at about 8pm, we braaied and drank some good red wine.

On the way to Maclear. Rob and Bron and a small issue with the electrics as the battery leads melted to the handbrake cable! He cut through it and they continued. We decided to stop at Declan's B&B for the night.
And we're off. Quick stop to fill up with fuel at Nottingham Road Fuel Company!
