Aotearoa...the land of the long white cloud.

22 May 2017

Tomorrow's the big day...after 5 weeks driving through this astonishing, beautiful, breathtaking, marvelous country it's time for us to say goodbye. The camper life was tough, adventurous, funny and last but not least cold...really cold but...WORTH IT! We have a long flight coming up and a serious jet we will be posting pics of the new country ( olΓ©, olΓ© πŸ˜†) in a few days. Stay tuned!!πŸ˜˜πŸ€πŸ’›

Before driving to Christchurch, we stopped at the Moeraki Boulders (big round stones on the beach) and at Lake Tekapo, where we experienced 2 seasons in two days! This magical place looked dark and mystical when cold and cloudy and completely different under the next day's beautiful sunshine. Ah, and we walked up the steepest Street of the world in Dunedin! Turn your heads, the house is fine πŸ™ƒ

Amazing and freezing cold (seriously now!) Fiordland! And the pictures don't even get close to the real beauty of these vast spaces! We hope you enjoy them anyway πŸ˜‰ β›°πŸŒ²β„

As we drove south, the landscape started to change. We left the sunshine and the perfect green prairies behind us to discover the wild and windy west coast. While our friends enjoy spring in Europe, we now clearly feel that it's autumn here! And there is something mystical about the old sleepy towns and the remote ancient gold mining villages on our way... πŸ€ πŸπŸ‚πŸƒ

North Island done, ready for the South Island πŸ€— While we travel, we do not only see and discover new landscapes, different cities or enjoy the weather 24h a day. Traveling for a whole year also means not being at home to enjoy a hot cup of tea on the couch when you are tired, it means not always being able to call friends or family when you need to talk, it also means to spend usual special days far from your loved ones and in different conditions. It means missing a lot, too, like daily routines, the smell of homemade food, a good bed...and all the other things you left behind. We are happy and grateful to know that all these things are waiting for us at home. In the meantime, we continue enjoying as much as possible this extraordinary and enriching adventure. We understood that the key is to find happiness within yourself and bring it along with you, wherever you go. πŸ€πŸ’›

I remember reading a quote when we were still at home preparing our journey. I didn't quite understand the real meaning of it at the beginning but the quote was still on my mind all this time. We have been travelling for almost 8 months and I think that today I finally figured out what it means! "Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations" Enjoy the pictures πŸ’›πŸ€πŸ’›

Imagine driving for hours through such extraordinary scenery that makes it difficult not to stop every 5 minutes. That's how our day started as we drove to the northernmost point of New Zealand. And it got more and more astounding as we arrived at Cape Reinga, where the Tasmanian Sea and the Pacific meet. Then, it became even more adventurous (and childish😁) when we decided to stop at 90 Miles Beach with its huge sand dunes. πŸ™ƒπŸ€™πŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈ

Today we took the ferry to visit the wonderful island of Rangitoto which is Auckland's largest and youngest volcanic cone. We've been trekking a lot since we arrived in New Zealand and our legs are starting to feel it. We hope you enjoy the pictures and we wish all of you a lovely weekend! πŸ˜˜πŸ€πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ

We are expecting a lot from these islands and so far we have not been disappointed. The nature is sublime and the beauty of this land shaped by volcanoes makes the cool temperatures bearable. And the people! They are one of the nicest we have encountered in 8 months: we are not used to bus drivers who climb out of the vehicle and write you down the numbers of the buses you need to catch to get to your destination! πŸ€
