Laura's adventure in Spain

12 July 2017

Day 9 Tues Last day to relax. Had our breakfast in the Antonio Bandares Square opposite the hotel. Relaxed by pool then drove to meet Jim near Estepona to view a lovely home on a golf club estate. Seriously thought of buying it as we could see ourselves living here but must be guarded with Brexit looming!! So hot and humid packing and had a drink whilst waiting for Saad returning from taking his scooter back. Shopping at El Cortes Shopping centre next door then a few drinks at Sinatras in the main street at the marina with all the beautiful people and motors. Going to miss Espana
Day 8 Mon Once Saad arrived home we all went to Gibraltar. I was pleasantly surprised to find it a really lovely place. My teenage friend from Scarrington, Mark Ablitt, has lived in Gib for 35 years and waited for us at border control to show us the nearest parking. Had coffee in the Casemates square. Kim and Clive's Ollie met us for a quick coffee and chat as he lives here and works in the Government. So lovely to meet up. Shopped on the main street; prices so cheap as no duty!! Saw a lovely ring!!! Mark drove us up the Rock and gave us a private tour. Ended up having cocktails on the Sunborn boat in Ocean Village. Watched a BA flight take off on the runway in the sea. Fish n chips bsck in Casemates square. Drove back to Puerto Banus shattered. Great day.

Day 7 Sun Woke late so coffee in our opposite square to wake us up. Drove to Casares del Sol, quieter beach and very lovely. Sat on a rock enjoying the water in my toes. Unsteady on my feet to be able to immerse my whole body in! Drove up the mountains and ended up in Estepona. Still love it here and had a lovely lunch at the Bahia beach bar. Strawberry gin and prawns pil pil - both my favourite. Back to pool to relax while Abs had his daily snooze. Facetimed Joe in London, Hannsh in Bali and mum in Cyorus. Saad still out with boys somewhere nearby. Drove to Benshavis as I loved Chico bar whrn I stsyed there previously. Hot but got chatting to some people. Drove back for a great Chinese near the hotel - lemon chicken and beef in oyster sauce.
Day 6 Sat Quick coffee in squsre opposite hotel then drove to Marbella. I don't psrticularly like Marbella, especially the crowded beach full of Brits but it was nice sitting having a fanta and being bombarded by the sellers with their fake designer goods. Careful not to glance their way otherwise difficult to get rid of. Walked up the central avenue lined with Salvador Dali artistic monuments until we reached the Orange Square and old part of Marbella. Very quaint. Lovely lunch being seranaded by a guitarist. icecream in a cone whilst wandered back to car. Relaxed by pool then drove to Estepona yo meet Jim and Viv, friends from Bahrain, at Blue Dolphin beach bar. Oh how we miss this simple life with the guaranteed weather. Great day

Day 5 Fri Enjoyed breakfast en route to Ronda on outskirts of Benhavis. Beautiful drive in the mountains to this lovely city. Ronda is a mountaintop city in Spain’s Malaga province in Andalusia that’s set dramatically above a deep gorge. This gorge (El Tajo) separates the city’s circa-15th-century new town from its old town, dating to Moorish rule. Puente Nuevo, a stone bridge spanning the gorge, has a lookout offering views. New town’s Plaza de Toros, a legendary 18th-century bullring, is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Sat in the square watching the world go by. Times like these you wish you could freeze them. Drove around and found a remote Bar Clementine for a tortilla and beef steak lunch. Back to the pool for a cool down but it didn't cool down: reached 33 degrees!! Met 2 young girls who are here for a long weekend. Walked into Puerto Banus marina to the Sinatra bar followed by pizza in Picasso. Good night
Day 4 Thurs Breakfast opposite hotel then a bit of shopping. Bought 2 pairs of shoes; might wear a pair at the wedding later. Met Saad for a tapas lunch. Drove to Mijas for Ahmed and Huda's wedding at the Restaurante Valparaiso. Wow fabulous wedding. All very open minded Saudis. Ahmed was at university with Saad and his parents were lovely. Have had a home in Marbella for 28 years. Food was excellent and the flamenco was brilliant. Drove home at 200 after finishing the evening being the oldest on the damce floor - again!!!!

Day 3 Wed Walked over highway to a lovely cafe for breakfast. Saad stayed over at friends. Ventured out in car and drove to Marbella Lidl. Not a huge fan of this town but good to see the prisecco still at great vslue at €1.95!! Bought my favourite strawberry gin . Walked around Puerto Banus. Personally I find this area shabby and very pretentious; fake is another word. Enjoyed a pina colada in a ship bar next to beach where the music was brilliant. Ate seafood next door which was ok. Walked by the designer shops passing the "beautiful" people loving thrmselves. Sad really. Drove back to Estepona, still our favourie. Had tapas at our friends from Bahrain Jim and Viv in their lovely home. Good to catch up. Home to bed shattered.

Day 2 Tues Breakfast in hotel cafe then relaxed by pool. My bike fall has really taken its toll; constant pain 🙁 Saad back late afternoon after a heavy night with his wedding party mates. Drove to Estepona and met Barbara, my Embassy colleague from ten years ago and who moved from Cyprus to Spain . Enjoyed a few strawberry gins at the marina. Much prefer this part as finding Marbella too "fake". Must be getting old!!! Walked along the "Posers" marina watching the flashy cars and "beautiful" people. Had a great steak at an Argentinian restaurant but kept me up during night; thank God I brought plenty of bags!!!

Day 1 Mon Up early and all very tired!!! flight to Malaga good but waited over an hour for our car hire!!! Good drive to Puerto Banus and hotel central. With the beautiful people so enjoyed a few gins by pool and swim. Badly bruised from my cycle ride yesterday so good to be in the water swimming. Met a couple (John and Joanna) from Liverpool whom we met last year in Estepona. Sinatras Bar in the marina was lively; met a few characters there and a lady with her dog Elvis who was adorable. Shame I couldn't understand a word she said! Saad joined us later and went to Joy's bar where Majed joined us. Falafels and shawarma in walk home. Great to feel an expat again ☀☀
