The Pantheon is the best preserved building from ancient Rome and was completed in c. 125 CE in the reign of Hadrian. Its magnificent dome is a lasting testimony to the genius of Roman architects and as the building stands virtually intact it offers a unique opportunity for the modern visitor to step back 2,000 years and experience the glory that was Rome.
FUNCTION & DEDICATION
The purpose of the building is not known for certain but the name, porch and pediment decoration suggest a temple of some sort. However, no cult is known to all of the gods and so the Pantheon may have been designed as a place where the emperor could make public appearances in a setting which reminded onlookers of his divine status, equal with the other gods of the Roman pantheon and his deified emperor predecessors.
It was so unusual to see a hole in the ceiling so perfectly built that it hardly ever rained in the church.

More Capri- bought perfume at a perfumery called Carthusia that they can trace the formula back to the 1300's. Smells just like the flowers on the island.
More of Capri...
We took an all day tour to Capri. It was great. it ended up being a private tour because the other people did not show up. Just us and the tour guide.
It was a long drive from Rome to Naples to get the ferry. About 2 1/2 hrs by minivan. Once we were there we had another guide which was a local of the island. It's the law in Italy that only locals can do the tours. We took a wonderful but scary ride by lift to the top of the island. Soooo beautiful! When we came back there was a shop that made sandals by hand to fit your foot. I met the owner and he signed my sandals🙂

More pics from the bike trip and after in the evening.
More of the city on our bike trip. St Peter's Square,
and the best gelato I have ever had!
Went on an all day electric bike tour of the city. It was a blast! It was just our guide and another man from South America. He took us all over the city. What a great way to see it! You could pedal but up steep hills you could put it in electric mode to help you. Loved it❤ I wish I could remember our guide's name, he was a local and so very interesting. He gave us a lot of history on the city and we even got to compare our cultures. Some of the rides were through thick crowds which was very difficult. I did run into a couple people which Nob will never let me
live down Lol. That day is one of my favorite memories.

More of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel...
The first picture is of the one of the holy doors that are only open during Jubilee year. I wasn't supposed to take a picture-didn't know that until I got a look from security😳
We went on a tour of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel and just Wow! What beauty in architecture and art. What a holy place. The only drawback was we went on one of the busiest days of the year. It was the year of Jubilee which only happens every 25 yrs and they let people go through the Holy doors that the public usually can't go through except during Jubilee. Also the Pope was going to be speaking the next day and cannonizing saints. You could barely fit through the hallways. I actually had to leave the crypts halfway through because I got so claustrophobic!
Trevi Fountain at night and the streets by our hotel.

I met Bob at the airport in Rome, we took the subway to our hotel. Very interesting to say the least. You are packed in like sardines and have to constantly watch out for pickpockets and people trying to steal. But we made it to our hotel-
the Trevi 41. Beautiful room on the 2nd floor(no elevators). We were just 1 block from the Trevi Fountain which was so beautiful !
Samie and I were parting ways this morning☹️ She was flying home to California to see her new granddaughter Riley and I was taking the train to Rome to meet up with Bob at Rome airport. I missed him terribly. It had been about 3 wks since I'd seen him. The train to Rome took about 1 1/2 hrs. Beautiful scenery through that area. I was really going to miss my sister! We had such a great time together. These pics were of our last night together.

Our last day in Florence. Here are some pics of the Hotel Pendini. We spent the day at the Uffizi Gallery art museum. One of the world's top art museums, the Uffizi Gallery houses some of the most important works of the Renaissance, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Botticelli and Michelangelo and a large collection of Greek and Roman sculptures. Very cool!

Florence and Cinque Terre
Took the train from Venice to Florence(about 2hrs).
We stayed at the Hotel Pendini in Florence. Very nice and great staff although the walls were paper thin, everything else was perfect. The next morning we took an early tour to Cinque Terre- a hiking tour. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been and probably the most challenging 5 mile hike of my life(for this out of shape girl). Cinque Terre, which means Five Lands, comprise the five small coastal villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso located in the Italian region of Liguria. We had wonderful guides. We had no idea we were hiking up a mountain and back down again. Boy did I sweat! Samie kept saying "lets go hiking she said, it will be fun she said". But in the end we were so glad we did it! The most beautiful views ever! The towns were so quaint. Had a lemon cello, the served it with black olives. One of the most memorable days ever🙂

We were going to try the opera but they were closed. So we took a gondola ride. Felt like I was in a dream! Loved it! Lasted about 30min worth every bit of the 20 euros per person🙂

Arrived in Venice this morning. The water taxi from the airport to our hotel was an hour long but so cool. After we checked in, we had dinner and walked around a bit. We were a very short walk to St Marks Square. I felt like I was dreaming! The most beautiful city I have ever seen!!! Canals everywhere, cobblestone streets. No cars. Even though there are a lot of people on the streets it was beautiful. Even the police and ambulances are boats. I am in love with this place❤️

Had a great day sightseeing. Bought a 2 day pass for the water bus. We took it to the train station to scope out where it was-45 min from our hotel. Samie and I had lunch and a beer by the waterfront. Walked back and got lost in the maze of streets several times, even with a map it was tough but fun.
