Jessica's voyage in China

23 March 2017

My first trip to Beijing was a bit tainted by the 'funny' dishes that i had encountered thanks to Shawn's recommendations lol. So I wasn't expecting much from this trip, but this time Beijing has probably changed my impression about the city's culinary scenes!
Chinese Barbecue is so exciting, coz it's not just meat. And you dont have to grill things on your own, and dont have to deal with the smoke and smelly clothes. They do the grilling for you! And they come in old "baskom" which we use back home in Indonesia a long time ago! Some 'funny' meats included here: chewy white stuff which is the part between pig's bones, chicken's stomach. I cant say i like them, but at least i TRIED them! I'm so proud of myself! 😅 I love everything else though! Including the spicy mushrooms, the eggplant with too much garlic, the grilled potato, the chicken wings, the mantou bread too.

Grassroot something with sugarcane. Loving it.
Dining in Beijing is so much more advanced than in Tokyo! You can order your food from your phone by capturing the QR code that's displayed on your table. When you pay, they bring you a small calculator that shows you the total price and another QR code that you can scan on your mobile for e-payment. And you can pay with your phone!! No need to take out your wallet, dig some cash or give your credit card and wait for them to swipe and give back your card, sign etc. So many steps!! In Beijing, just scan the QR code from your phone, and that's it!

I treated myself an ice cream. Chocolate and Seasalt!!
Dinner on the 2nd night was hot pot. No funny meat this time - yeayy! They have meatball, and the soup for the hot pot is mild and nice, reminded me of Bakso or Bakwan Surabaya lol! The beef stew was very nice. And i thought they way they use the stand to put all the plates are very clever!!
Lunch with the team -- as always, ordered too much food. The yellow bun was sweet, made of some flower. Amenthis is what Geoff told me, i believe. The yellow thing on a sticky rice, that was Millet. Whatever that is, i didnt like it 😝 The fish was delicious though, and the tomato based noodle was interesting because it tasted like tomato pasta! And Geoff reminded me that Marco Polo introduced these noodles to Italy after coming back from China, and they tried to make something similar. But because they dont have the same ingredients, pasta is the closest thing they could make, and voila!
Seems cold for mid of March. Beijing has never been a destination that excites me much, but i'm going to say goodbye to my colleagues who i feel like my dear friends.

My first trip to Beijing was a bit tainted by the 'funny' dishes that i had encountered thanks to Shawn's recommendations lol. So I wasn't expecting much from this trip, but this time Beijing has probably changed my impression about the city's culinary scenes! First dinner : Shawn can't help to include some 'unusual' dishes which are his favorites. But this time he'a going slow. First stop is the meat in the chicken's neck. Not bad actually 😚
