Cycling in Italy and Croatia

20 September 2018

Cycled Jelsa to cucuraj then straight onto ferry to Drvenj. 55km. Started with 10km climb. Walked a tiny bit but pleased with my effort getting to the top. Lots of deserted stone settlements and stone walls every where. Not much traffic and often no one else in sight, road to myself, very pleasant. Fields of lavender but not in flower. Lots of little local produce stalls selling olive oil, wine, dried figs, talking. Huge mountains on mainland.

Rab. Apartment in old town. Cycled from Novinj. Good ride - cycling footpath most of the way. Today going by boat to PAG Is at noon.

31 August 2018

31 August Woke to flashes of lightning and loud thunder followed by heavy rain. Stayed until it cleared. Left at 11:30 when the rain had eased. Headed back to Somma Lombardo and then along The Ticino river bike way. Fairly clearly signed but checked on maps. Flat and mostly good track with a few big puddles and occasional rocky sections. Stopped for panini and coffee at small bar very close to the cycleway. Called a Bici Bar. Were told that a pro cyclist lived nearby - few photos and memorabilia of Trek Segafredo Team. Nanette got a puncture just as we were coming into berenate Ticino. We took wheel off and 2 took wheel to cycle shop 2 km up the road to Bopolora Socacino to fix as we couldn’t get new tube to inflate. Put wheel back on and went to check out bike shop. Very quaint town on the river. Rode onto Ponte Vecchio village and then another 2km into the countryside to accommodation we had booked. Agriturismo place - large working farm with accommodation and classy restaurant.

28 August 2018 Rode to Mercallo. Pleasant ride through wooded areas using Naviki to guide us. Small quaint village with bar, small friendly supermarket, pharmacy, cafe and church. Nanette cooked yummy Pasta for dinner. 29 August Rode 24 km to Varese to meet up with Meriel and Patrick after she had registered. Difficult ride over various surfaces, narrow track in parts and very steep climb into Varese. Although some pretty views along the lakes. Rode back and pasta for tea. Organised to catch bus next day to watch Meriel in the time trial. 30 August Up early to catch 6:30 bus to Varese. Walked to start of race, found viewing spots. Saw M and P. Watched M start from tricky ramp. First woman crashed over edge and taken off in ambulance. Very scary to watch. Cheered and clapped competitors. Meriel seemed to do well and came 5th in her age group. Found cafe with wifi and then met up with M and P for celebratory late lunch (scallopini) Back to little bar in square for more drinks.

26 August 2018

Departed Sunday September 26 Emirates to Dubai then onto Milan. Bit of confusion at Milan airport re pickup. Taken to stunning accommodation by Amelio. Sant Anna in Somma Lombardo. A sprawling rural retreat on a wooded hillside with views to distant alps. Walked down the steep hill to a bar and had beer sitting on the grass near the river. Amelio took us to a local restaurant in the village and feasted on huge hamburgers with local beer. Walked around the local church then met by Margaret from our accommodation in her van. She was an extreme sports woman into mountain biking. Organised to collect bikes from storage at airport. Next morning had the most delicious breakfast with homemade blueberry muffins, bread, muesli, scrambled eggs and coffee. Put our bikes together without too many problems. Set off after short filming by Margaret.
