Heading North

31 July 2015

Finally reached Tromsø and passed the Tromsø bridge. On the way we passed a narrow bottleneck at the turn of tide, saw puffins fishing and spotted a huge bear on the shore.

30 July 2015

Botnhamn. Last night stop before reaching out final destination in Tromsø.

29 July 2015

Après l'effort, le réconfort! A donation from the friendly Norwegians
Arrived in Gibostad after 35miles of slalom across rocks in the fjords.
No luck with whale watching in Andenes. We head towards Skrolsvik for the night.

27 July 2015

Some 40miles later, we stop for the night in Andenes, north most settlement in the Lofoten islands and whale watching point. We had a long day at sea, with demanding navigation and changing winds.

26 July 2015

Today's route through the Raftsundet strict, with stopover in Trollfjorden and second hike of the day
First stop in Skrova, some 5miles from Svolvær. We had a nice late start that gave me time for a short walk up a hill from which the view on the bay is breathtaking. Skrova is a village of whale hunters where this tradition goes on despite recriminations from environmentalists to stop the hunting and lobbying from industry to get hold of the waters for oil extraction. The major threat though comes from the youth leaving the islands in pursuit of a different life.

25 July 2015

Departure from Svolvær and first dinner on board.

24 July 2015

On the fast ferry from Bodø to Svolvær, luckily on time after a late flight from Amsterdam
Leaving now with a light (and yet warm) luggage. Long day ahead: train to Amsterdam, then flight to Oslo and Bodø, and finally ferry to Svolvær.
