Sad to see our trip end but always taking advantage of travel time, Ryan and I were able to hit the Centurian Lounge in Miami for some dinner before the flight. Our flight home to San Diego was quick and easy... and someone passed out from all of the fun 😉 Even though the trip is over, I know Ryan will enjoy recounting his travels and showing off his book to all of his family and friends!
Our final Boca activity was lunch at Duffy's with Uncle Paul! We had fun catching up and making plans for future visits, both in Florida and California. Paul had a karaoke party last night and came straight to Duffy's from golf this morning. He continues to be the busiest retired person ever! During lunch Ryan captured my phone and took a million selfies... good thing he's so adorable!!
Ryan had a busy day out and about, all around Boca. I'm pretty sure I drove Military and Federal from Spanish River to Palmetto at least 5 times each. We started the day with Bagel Wit A Schmear to see Emma Gershon (she graduates on Wednesday-- we have known her since she was Ryan's age!.. and oh my goodness just typing that now makes me think about how quickly Ryan's graduation day will arrive 😮). After bagels, we hit the newly-renovated Sugar Sand Park, which turns out to be pretty much an exact replica of the old park, just with updated structures and surfaces. Ryan had fun running around, but it was pretty hot, so we decided to go check on the Parkside house and cool off in the AC that we are still paying for. Our next door neighbor Max was home, and was beyond thrilled to see Ryan. The two buds quickly fell back into their old rhythms and set up a game of soccer in Max's backyard! No picture of that because I was too busy chatting with Max's parents...

We spent the evening with the Families Beers and Ehlers-- with guest of honor Keelan, Shelly and Dave's foster son! Ryan held Keelan for a while and Shelly was quite impressed with his baby skills, especially when he supported Keelan's head while passing the baby to me! Ryan also used his big-brothering (and budding-babysittering) skills with Hudson, driving Hudson's car, making up games in the playroom, and just generally being silly. What a guy that little Rynosaurous is! (And ps Keelan is ADORABLE!)
A look at the book! It is a substantial paperback with chapters for each of the contest winners. There are 28 stories that were chosen from over 300 entries, mostly from Palm Beach and surrounding counties, but the author said that they have a growing number of entries from across the US. Each contributor has a short bio and name printed in the table of contents and in the corresponding chapter. You will notice that the publisher made an editing error on Ryan's bio-- changing "he recently moved TO San Diego" to "he recently moved FROM San Diego". What crazy person would want to move from San Diego to hot, muggy, buggy Boca?!?! 😜 Ryan had the author and some of his friends sign the inside cover of the book, and yes, grandparents-- we were able to get extra copies of the book for you to have 💘
The award ceremony! The author of the book, Alex Watson (who is a junior in high school!), spoke about writing and having the courage and passion to write stories. Alex has been publishing the Let's Write Together series for 4 years-- next year is his last, as he will go to college and focus on other things-- and has published 3 fiction books of his own. Certainly an inspiration to budding writers! Each contributor received a copy of the book and a certificate-- and a paparazzi-storm following! It was fun to see the kids so excited, and even more fun to see Ryan's name in print. I think Ryan is already brainstorming ideas for next year's contest! Ryan co-wrote his story, "Alexander Hamilton," with his friend Livvie Ho-- so of course we had to take some pics of the two authors together, as well as with his other buddies!
Ryan was looking spiffy this afternoon for his award ceremony! We picked up Ana from Grandview, made a pit stop at Dunkin Donuts (not pictured 🙃), and met up with friends at the Hagen Ranch branch of the Palm Beach County Library! Award ceremony pics and narrative to come...!
Ryan was literally tackled to the ground by an onslaught of 3rd graders when he walked in to the Great Room-- his dream come true! On our way to Grandview he was SO excited, saying that this was what he has been waiting for ever since he found out he won the story contest! Ryan's friends made him "welcome back" signs and were thrilled to see their buddy. "Thrilled" is an understatement for how Ryan felt. I'm pretty sure all of the attention made his year! It was wonderful to see everyone at Grandview and catch up for a bit. Not surprisingly, Ryan willingly went to take a nap for the brief hour we have until we need to head to Delray. We will pick up Ryan's friend Ana at Grandview before heading to the ceremony! More fun ahead!
It was up and at 'em this morning as we had a few errands to run-- so a hearty breakfast was in order at Another Broken Egg Cafe! Ryan enjoyed being the center of attention (shocking!) and worked on a new book about ninjas and football.. you know, typical 9-year-old stuff!

We have wonderful, homey accommodations in Boca-- Ryan was right at home in the top bunk, which he says is "a lot lower" than his loft bed in San Diego. I'm not sure that's true, but he can think what he wants 😜Tomorrow we will have a day filled with friends and awards! Yay!
Made it to Miami and immediately paid a visit to the Centurian Lounge! We had an easy flight, and Ryan had fun taking pictures of the sunset as we were descending 😍 Soon we will pick up our rental and head north to Boca!
All settled on the plane and anticipating an on time departure! We had fun looking for the Lark Street house from the window at our gate! We won't be able to see it when we take off, but we will be on the right side of the plane when we return home on Saturday, so we are looking forward to that view at the end of our trip!
We picked up Ryan from school at 11 AM. It is now 11:30 and we have made it to the airport and through security, and are now enjoying the lounge. Living so close to the airport in SD has its perks for sure!
