Day trip to Richmond, VA, the USA 2018

6 July 2018

With it getting into the later hours, we started making the full home run back to Chesapeake πŸ πŸ”™ So we departed via the Interstate 64 🚦🚘 Chao for now, Richmond πŸ––πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
Before leaving Richmond, we stopped off at Floodwall Park - in an area coincidentally called Manchester - to view from the scenic lookover towards Downtown Richmond from the other side of the James River πŸžπŸ™ A really nice area for families, dog walkers and cyclists πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸ•πŸš²
⬅️ Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the capitol building was completed in 1788 and houses the oldest legislative body in the Western Hemisphere - the Virginia General Assembly, established in 1619 πŸ›
As the sky started spitting, we stopped off at Capitol Square, where the Virginia State Capitol is present along with many statues, and many surrounding offices & mansions 🏫🌧
The Old City Hall, a grand colonial-style structure built in 1785, caught mine and Callum's eyes as we walked past πŸ‘€πŸ°
Bizarrely, no coffee shops were close by, so we went into the cafΓ© upstairs in the Critical Care Hospital of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) πŸ₯πŸ₯ The university in general is very present downtown.
Next door is the White House of the Confederacy, which can also be toured for an extra $6 per adult but we chose against it πŸ’΅πŸš«
Two bonus sow-on patches from the Civil War Museum πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Plus, I was not amused πŸ˜‘πŸŽ©πŸ˜†
Located in a modern building deeper into downtown, the Museum of the Confederacy houses a collection of Confederate artifacts that is probably the best in the country πŸ”« Exhibits on the ground floor trace the history of the Civil War in chronological order, and are extremely informative. There's also a fascinating collection of Confederate battle flags upstairs and an exhibit about civilian life during the war in the basement πŸ΄πŸ‘—
Richmond is a cultured city, and the splendid Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is the cornerstone of the local arts scene πŸ–Ό The highlight of its eclectic, world-class collection was definitely the FabergΓ© egg collection, one of the largest on display outside Russia πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ₯š
Here's a winning formula: fuse Vietnamese and French techniques, ensure that most of your produce is organic and present in your creations on artfully arranged small plates πŸ‡»πŸ‡³πŸ‡«πŸ‡·πŸŒΏ This on-trend place, Sen Organic, does all this great effort, offering delicacies such as the lemongrass salmon I ordered πŸŸπŸ‹
After leaving home about 9.15am this morning, we are welcomed into Richmond with a statue of Stonewall Jackson, a prominent figure in the Southern roots culture that originates here πŸ”ŽπŸ”±
