April in Portugal

3 May 2017

The University of Coimbra, founded in 1259, is among the oldest universities in Europe. The baroque library is the highlight.
My Yelp check-ins earned me the title Queen of Anadia!! Love the sound of it! A last royal tour of the palace before heading south again.

Next we visited Quinta das Marias and met Peter and Maria (namesake of the vineyard) Eckert. The winery uses traditional lager with foot pressing for pre-fermentation, as well as modern tanks with temperature control. Peter treated us to his beautiful encruzado three ways: oaked, unoaked and barrel tasting. Also love their touriga nacional and 100% alfrochiero.
Missed out on Setubal and Barraida due to car rental problem and Labor Day, so really look forward to visiting our first vineyard. Quinta do Perdigão in Dão has several 90+ wines, among other awards. Venessa the owner, whose artwork graces the bottles, is super nice and we toured the vineyard with an entourage of dogs and horse.
Breakfasted like a queen at the Bussaco hotel. Mimosa, home made yogurt (tasted much better than those in plastic cups), Portuguese melon with presunto, perfectly boiled eggs in egg cups, Portuguese cheeses, artisanal bread....

Staying in the Bussaco Palace hotel, built by the last king of Portugal. So beautiful. Our room has a balcony that reminds me of Romeo and Juliet.
Mealhada, tourist destination to "have a meal". The town is known for its succulent, tender roasted pig sucklings. Rei dos Leitoes has an impressive list of sparkling wines. Complimentary ovos moles as a sweet ending.
Aveiro, one of my favorite Portuguese cities.
Found a cute shop, Aveiro Emotions, and bought a t shirt plus beers. M bought a few tees at the tourist info shop.

30 April 2017

A worthwhile detour to Peniche for an excellent lunch at Marisqueira Mirandum. Amazing seafood platter for one that feeds more than two for €45. Also the best seafood soup bursting with the essence of the ocean.
Saw some windmills on our way north

An unhelpful guy at the car rental place sabotaged our planned trip to Setubal, but we managed a nice lunch at Ponto Final, on the other side of river Tejo. Gorgeous panoramic view of Lisbon.

28 April 2017

Dinner at A Licorista in Lisbon. A whole griller octopus, with head and 8 arms, tender and succulent, for just €9.50.
Our friend Joaquim proudly showed us his Little Free Library, located in the Quinta das Conchas park in north Lisbon.

27 April 2017

After exploring the Time Out Market and a massage in Martin Moniz, we have dinner at our favorite restaurant, Cervajaria Ramiro. I am glad they have barnacles, not in season during our last visit. Also saw some scarlet shrimp carabineros. Price is high at €88/kg, but the server said it is the best shrimp in the world. Well, it sure is best in my life!
Then a brief stopover in the church in the Jeronimos Monastery next door.
First stop, our favorite place in Belem for some pasteis de natas!
