Walking out, the winter sunset was thin and crisp, and it offered no reprieve from the November chill.
The Wisconsin River, below the Alexander Hydro Dam, left ice sculptures on the rocks along the shoreline.
My hope was to try out my new crampons on Lake Alexander, but there wasn’t a soul out on the ice; I’ll wait a couple more weeks. Standing at the shore, I heard the deep bass of the ice cracking and thickening, sending reverberations back and forth from one shore to the next.
I kept today’s excursion local so that I could safely test my new gear for winter hiking. Parking at the entrance, I walked the road down to Lake Alexander.
