31 December 2018

Cologne is a nice place to visit for New Year's Day celebration. The city is vibrant and has a number of attractions which are worth a visit. Obviously, the Cologne Cathedral is the most famous. On the 31st, I did not go inside the cathedral because Mass was going on. However, the plaza around the cathedral was filled with people and very loud because of fireworks explosion. One thing that I really liked about the city is its Christmas market. It was well decorated without being too tacky, and I was able to encounter many delicious German Christmas food. It was definitely the highlight of the night, other than fireworks. The fireworks were a bit annoying because it was not properly organized by the city and so many immature people blew up their fireworks towards people on purpose. There was no 10 second countdown, so I almost missed it. Nevertheless, it was nice to see fireworks next to the river Rhine.
Marriott Courtyard was nice, and it wasn't far way from the central station. One night rate was 208 euros including breakfast. Standard room was not too big, just about right. Pros: Location was good. Breakfast was good, even though the bistro was a bit crowded Room was cozy and clean Cons: High speed internet is not free No shower door, so a water puddle gets created No mini fridge
Arriving from Maastricht. Direct train from Maastricht to Aachen was cancelled at Heerlen, so we had to take a bus arranged by Arriva. It took more than 40 mins to Aachen, so we just arrived on time for the train to Cologne. ICE train to Cologne was so packed, which forced us to stand for the whole duration of the trip. Cologne was not too packed yet, but there were so many police officers on the street.
