Greetings from Muroran, Japan. This was the Vollendam's maiden stop in Muroran, so the Mayor came out to give us a very nice welcoming speech, hoping we had fond memories of our visit. Then these grade school children danced for us. They were intent about doing a good job and darling, and the passengers were so appreciative. We were five deep at the railing on the Promenade Deck, and hanging off the balconies, cheering and applauding. As we slowly pushed away from the dock, the children ran down the pier waving and calling out to us. And passengers waved towels and echoed back their shouts of "Sayonara." It was a sweet and touching experience, never to be forgotten. And I'm pleased to say, our Captain is not stingy with the ship's whistle--he gave them a departing salute of six mighty blasts. Very satisfying.

Snow capped peaks and a darling town awaits in Aomori. Known for it's floats, which are kept in a museum between parades. Very colorful. Celebrating the Netherlands national King's Day holiday today by wearing the color orange--not my best color, but want to participate... My Dad was born in Holland. The crew on this Holland America ship break out into "Lung Zelza Lehfa" every chance they get, and I'm happy to sing along.

The former palace of the Emperor. At one time, it was Korea's version of Beijing's Forbidden City, but supposedly during one of their occupations, the Japanese dismantled many of the buildings and removed them to Japan... "To the victor belong the spoils."
Apparently when Korean's visit the Palace, it's a sign of respect (and fun, one thinks) to wear traditional dress.

Jeanette's joke photo of a Korean chain store--see what I have to put up with? 🤗
The memorial to the Americans who fought for South Korea during the Korean War. They are still appreciated. When the lease on the large U. S. army base in the middle of Seoul expires, the base will be developed as a park for all the citizens.

Korea hasn't been a principally Buddhist country for a thousand years, but the temples now in use are gorgeous. Click through the arrows to see some additional views.
