The route takes you through the historic gold mining town of Oatman, Arizona a fascinating place to explore. After the gold panned out the miners left leaving behind their Burros which eventually became wild and are now protected but still freely roam the town to the delight of tourists who may purchase approved burro food to feed them.
This is the historic Back Country Byway route of Route 66 from Needles, California to Kingman, Arizona. It actually officially starts in Topock, Arizona, where I began, a small unincorporated community in Mohave County, Arizona. From Kingman, in reverse this 47-mile-long road climbs from the broad Sacramento Valley just south of Kingman over Sitgreaves Pass in the jagged Black Mountains to the old gold mining camp of Oatman. The drive then runs south to Golden Shores just north of Topock.
