Beth & Lois's NOLA Adventure

1 May 2017

Our last meal in 'Nawlins was at The Pelican Club located on a quiet pedestrian mall between Royal & Conti in the Quarter. A perfect culinary farewell!
Monday we brunched at the Court of Two Sisters. The weather was absolutely beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed the Southern spread of food. We hopped a crowded trolley car and visited the Garden District, known for historic 19th century homes and the Lafayette Cemetery. A lovely day for strolling..

We woke Sunday to tornado warnings & 90% chance of rain, delaying JazzFest. So we ventured down to the French Market which became the Drench Market when the storm hit. We ducked from shop to shop. the rain coming down so fast & hard that pigeons joined us. A Bloody Mary and some jazz helped pass the time while the thunder clapped overhead. Had super delicious fried oysters over spinach - artichoke baguettes as we watched the oyster shucker do his thing.

Second day skies were still threatening & wind still blowing and hotter. Blues tent had water misters overhead and some great bands. Lunch was a veggie plate on the grass. washed down with beer. The Marduk Gras Indians were definitely the most colorful group in their feathers. Lots of talented local musicians participating.

Festival was very well organized and everyone very friendly and accommodating.

As the sun starting to set, we slowly strolled into the heart of the Quarter...where the narrow streets were becoming pedestrian malls..
Wandering into Jackson Square we enjoyed the interactive street action.
Started our New Orleans portion with a stroll along the Ole Miss to set the scene.
Stopped in Biloxi for a late Thursday lunch. The downtown waterfront is true mixture of Vegas casinos, southern style...
And the old...a delicious lunch at the Half Shell. Shrimp & Grits with a creamy cheesy bacon infused sauce. Yumm!
First nite spent in Fort Walton Beach at BW on the high rise hotel strip hugging the dunes. Dinner was super delicious at the Broadway Crab Shack.
BW decor a shock at first, but after a good nite's sleep lulled by the breaking waves, the place looked a lot more uniquely appealing.

Leaving Sarasota under ever-fair skies, we motor north for a brief stop in Tallahassee to check out our state capital. The House was in session debating medical marijuana etc so we enjoyed various works of Florida-inspired art at the State Museum.
