Angie's voyage in Hanoi, Vietnam

8 June 2017

I'm flying to Shanghai on Monday to teach at the WILL Foundation, a home and family to children. I'll be starting new journi for this adventure. Follow the link below to sign-up to follow along in China. God is good!! https://journi.app.link/Jamb4RqD6E

http://wp.me/p5yiti-4T Blog post - hopefully one more yet after this :)

30 April 2017

The journi has come full circle. I'm back in St. Charles with a grateful heart. For a reminder of God's faithfulness, He sent a rainbow when I made it home. Thanks for following! I'll keep you updated on any new adventures ahead.
Landed in the U.S.A.! I'm into hour 25 of traveling - woohoo! Hanging out in the Detroit airport before the final leg to St. Louis. Can you spot the two birds in this picture?

29 April 2017

The journey home has begun. Some tearful goodbyes, but I'm also anticipating some joyful reunions. God is good! I am humbled and grateful.

28 April 2017

Is there really any better way to end your student teaching placement than a lock-in with 32 of you closest friends (aka students)? In all seriousness, this is actually a lot of fun! I love these kids :)
P.s. If you don't know her, it'd be hard do figure out, I dressed as my lovely mother for "I have a dream" day.
Today's spirit week theme is "I have a dream..." (what do you want to be when you grow up). Does the polo give away who I am today? ;)

27 April 2017

Fun night out with friends!

26 April 2017

I love fostering exploration and curiosity. We loved studying this praying mantis!

25 April 2017

My beautiful friend Rosa sent me to Vietnam with this symbolically artistic box. I've been filling it with prayers and blessings each day, you can see it is overflowing!
Already had to say some "see you laters". I will miss these loving Christ-filled young adults. I am grateful to have the opportunity to be part of this Monday night Bible Study each week :)

24 April 2017

For those of you who had concerns when you found out that I don't like dogs, you'll be happy to know that I am surviving living with these two rascals and that I actually somewhat like them :)

23 April 2017

My last Sunday in Hanoi was filled with Church and Fellowship, the Women's History Museum, a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, shopping and wandering around, Bun (Noodles), Sticky Rice, Banh Mi, Passion Fruit, Deep talks, 4 motorbike taxis and 8 kilometers of walking. Today was a good day.

22 April 2017

Concordia production of Sherlock Holmes. Dinner with lovely company beforehand.
Spent today at a workshop by Gini Rojas - lots of collaboration and information on English language learning

21 April 2017

New blog post - http://wp.me/p5yiti-2B
Went to the Ethnology Museum again - this time with 4th graders! Did you know there are 54 different ethnic groups/tribes within Vietnam?

18 April 2017

From "Forgotten God" by Francis Chan "Let your Light Shine before men so that...they might give glory to YOUR FATHER in Heaven." (Matthew 5:16)

17 April 2017

Celebrating a successful completion of day 1 of student-led parent conferences, my coop took me out for a treat. I also thought I'd share this amateur cook's attempt at an imitation shepherd's pie. I'm still not adept at shopping in the grocery stores and accidentally cooked minced pork instead of ground beef - it's still tasty!

16 April 2017

Christ is Risen!! Happy Easter from Sara and I. Easter Egg Hunt and Potluck after church :)

15 April 2017

I took a quick day trip from Hanoi to cross off one more beauty on the Vietnam bucket list: Ha Long Bay. We cruised around the Bay, rode in rafts through Floating Village, and ventured into one of the caves. Petey the Penguin traveled all the way from Zion Kindergarten in Missouri to join me!

13 April 2017

God bless your Holy Week. Sometimes church isn't decorated with a tall steeple and pretty glass windows. Sometimes church is the 17th floor of a high rise. "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." (Matt 18:20)

11 April 2017

My roommate Anna had to return to Australia unexpectedly this weekend. I definitely miss her! She is always reminding me of God's provision and faithfulness. A few weeks ago, all 4 of us roommates enjoyed dinner together at Dieu's Cuisine.

10 April 2017

9 April 2017

"Everybody's got a water buffalo. Yours is fast but mine is slow." (Veggie Tales, anyone?)
I traveled solo when I went to Ho Chi Minh City. One of the blessings in this is that I met quite a few other travelers and we had some great conversations. Please pray that a light was shined and a seed planted especially for Angela (having the same name is a great conversation starter!), Leona, Dominic, Jens, and Arden.

8 April 2017

Another Day of trekking through the Sa Pa mountains. We slept in a village home stay last night, hiked in the morning, and ended our journey in a waterfall stream to swim. Beautiful! Now, I'm on the bus back to Hanoi.

7 April 2017

SaPa trek Day 1

6 April 2017

Sa Pa is off to a good start :)
Back from Ho Chi Minh and boarded a sleeper bus to SaPa. Hopefully I'll be showing you some pretty views soon :)

5 April 2017

Experienced the Cu Chi tunnels - a guerrilla war tactic used by Vietnamese in the Vietnam-American War. They were originally designed so that small Vietnamese soldiers could fit but not built American soldiers.

4 April 2017

Mekong Delta

3 April 2017

Wandering around Ho Chi Minh City. At one point, it got a bit rainy
Spring Break = Traveling! First stop was War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City - a pretty heavy exhibit. Second picture is of a Catholic Cathedral.

2 April 2017

Smoothies and Ban Mi sandwiches after church. I love this international community of young adults. When you get a group of Jesus followers who have moved away from their homes on mission, the conversation is pretty inspiring :)

1 April 2017

A beautiful, sunny day perfect for a morning run, pink dragonfruit, a walk through town, and reading some precious promises by the lake :)

31 March 2017

Friday before Spring Break - ya hoooo!! Science Investigation and Writing Gallery Walk of Historical Informative Texts and Narratives. Not to brag, but I have some pretty bright students :)

30 March 2017

Meet another one of my lovely roommates, Sara, from Florida. A vibrant spirit and Christ-centered vision. We were cruising around on her motor bike tonight :)

28 March 2017

Really amazing to be in a community of ministry in a communist country. This first grade student's last day was Friday. We said a blessing for her as she left. It was explained as a "wish" or "talking to God" if we come from families that pray.

26 March 2017

If you go to Vietnam and don't have Pho, did you actually go to Vietnam?

25 March 2017

New blog post: https://arsteinbacher.wordpress.com/2017/03/25/marked/
Touristy Day: Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (and models of traditional homes), Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and the Temple of Literature.

24 March 2017

Celebrated International Day at Concordia International School. What fun!

23 March 2017

GOOOO THUNDER! Assistant coaching middle school volleyball :) Hey Dad, Vince Lombardi quotes have made their mark on Vietnam too!

22 March 2017

Some of the scenery on one of the running paths I like to take

21 March 2017

This is what I do during the day: debrief debates with paintbrushes of pontification, make mountain models and topographic maps, and guide minds to solve math problems. We are building brains!
Found a friend in my room today. He was little :)

19 March 2017

Many letters, emails, and messages from home. Thank you for all the love and encouragement!

18 March 2017

This is ridiculous to post but I was a little too excited to find these 2 apples (sliced and ready to eat) for just 10,000 Dong (about $.50). Normally 1 whole apple is over 150,000 Dong. My roommate and I already enjoyed some!

17 March 2017

I met this lovely sister in Christ, Thanh Nhu, last weekend. She has a beautiful heart! She is the only Christian in her family - please pray for her to remain strong and as she ministers to her family.

16 March 2017

Don't worry, I'm actually doing teacher things too :)

15 March 2017

Night time run around the lake

14 March 2017

When you're in Asia and you're clearly a Westerner, some people treat you like a celebrity and ask to take selfies with you. I'll always oblige and then take a selfie with them...still deciding if this is a good idea or bad idea.

13 March 2017

Yesterday was a day of food: First, Bun Bo Nam Bo. Then Mango, Coffee, and Green Tea Ice Cream/Shaved Ice. Finally, snails!

12 March 2017

Meet one of my lovely roommates, Mignon. She is from South Africa and has a beautiful heart for the Lord. I cherish all of our talks in the mornings and dinner time.
"There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call - one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." (Ephesians 4:4-6) Amen! Worshipping with the united Body of Christ from all across the world :)
Welcome to the Lord's family, Samuel! I've become much more thankful for technology when I'm halfway across the world :) Thank you to Pastor Nate for helping me join the celebration today.

11 March 2017

Went to Old Quarter with my friend Jennifer who works at Concordia. I tried a Red Bean Ice Cream bar and also saw a free, outdoor gym facility (notice the bench press bar on the sidewalk).

10 March 2017

First week of school is complete! I went out to a restaurant with the upper school teachers tonight - praising God that I am surrounded by wonderful people. I was going to try to send you all a video of the traffic but could only send a picture. Motor bikes are a very common mode of transportation.

9 March 2017

Buen Provecho - Dinner out with teacher ladies. Mexican in Vietnam :)

8 March 2017

Grocery shopping at L's place - I suppose you could call it the Vietnamese version of Walmart (a one stop shop...kinda). It's about the size of a classroom and is much more organized than some of the other stores.

7 March 2017

Here's a little photo tour of Concordia International School Hanoi. Enjoy!

6 March 2017

First day of school in the books! Whoo-a lot to take in :) A bus picks us teachers up at 7:15 and takes us home at 4:45. Here's a little taste of my drive to school.

5 March 2017

Last night I made it to my home for the next 8 weeks. I am staying with 3 other ladies: Sara works at Concordia International School with me, Mignon (from South Africa), and Anna (from Australia). They have already been such blessings!

4 March 2017

I'm in Seoul, South Korea about to board for the final leg of my journey to Hanoi! Last flight I sat by Dong Hyun Lee, a professor from Korea. He was so interesting! He just enrolled his daughter who has special needs in preschool, and He is very nervous. Please pray for both him and his daughter as she starts preschool on Monday.
These two loving parents woke up extra early to drop me off at the airport today! About 20 hours of flight time ahead - I'll be arriving in Hanoi at 10pm Saturday (Hanoi is 13 hours ahead)

2 March 2017

So glad I got to meet my nephew Samuel before flying out for Vietnam :)
