Alan and Lenore's Viking Baltic cruise

16 June 2017

Our last day on the cruise. We took a bus tour of Bergen and environs with a walk around town in the afternoon. Packed and ready to head home tomorrow.

15 June 2017

We traveled to Eidfjord nestled in the heart of one of Norway's most scenic regions. We had a six hour tour starting by crossing the Havanger Suspension Bridge. We stopped at the Tvinde Waterfall and traveled down the mountain on a road with hairpin turns as we headed to Gudvagen, the Viking Village (think Bethpage Restoration). Lunch was provided while the chief Viking entertained us with Viking history. Tonight we dine again at Manfredi's.

Today we are in Stavanger, Norway. It is both a quaint but expensive city right on the North Sea. We visited a Viking monument with three inverted swords on the harbor. Then a trip to the country where there are beautiful mountains and fjords. We stopped at Baker's Paradise for a waffle with sour cream and the best strawberry preserves I have ever tasted. Some final touring of the sites, walk around old town and back to the ship.

We were supposed to visit Aalborg, Denmark but the wind was strong and the seas choppy (sounds like the start of a Jack London novel) and so we will have a day of traveling to Norway. We have a galley tour later today and will dine at the Chef's Table, one of the two special restaurants onboard. So today, we lounge.

We are now in Denmark and had a morning excursion to Copenhagen. As is the case with most cities, we saw the Royal Palace and the changing of the guard. Hans Christian Anderson wrote the little mermaid and her statue is in the harbor but has been subjected to vandalism frequently. They have a commune called Christiana heralding back to the 60's. Tonight we have a galley tour and then a one hour canal tour with jazz accompaniment.

11 June 2017

Very long day with a 3 hour train ride to Berlin and back. Had an extensive tour of the city by bus and cruise, the latter on the Spree river which included lunch. The city has a very active building program and seemed busy but not overcrowded. We visited the Reichstag, Brandenburg gate and checkpoint Charlie with parts of the wall still intact.

10 June 2017

Today was our trip to Gdansk, Poland. Most of the town was destroyed y either the Germans or Soviets and has been rebuilding ever since. It is the Amber capital (who knew, who cares) and Lenore bought a pair of earrings. Lots of canals (like all the cities by the Baltic). At one point in the distant past, it was a separate country.

9 June 2017

Today was a day off for touring as we were sailing to Poland. Slept late, leisurely breakfast and then a cooking demonstration (wild mushroom risotto, yum). Late lunch, port talk and finally a Beatles cover band to end the day.

8 June 2017

Today we visited Tallinn, Estonia. Dreary, wet and cold day, not the best for sightseeing. There is a medieval old town with two levels. It is well preserved as most of the buildings are made of stone. Rita was our guide and very instructive especially in the issue of the people of Estonia not liking the Russian government.

6 June 2017

Today we started our Russian excursions. Had to go through immigration right off the ship which was tedious but we are told should be faster for the next two trips. We took a panoramic tour of St Petersburg with a rather jovial tour director. Tonight we are going to the ballet to see Swan Lake. The next day we went to the Hermitage. It is a huge art museum but our guide was so helpful and it was informative and enjoyable. Back on the ship and set sail to Estonia.

5 June 2017

A rainy day in Helsinki with a three hour tour of the city. First stop to a church built into bedrock because the neighbors didn't want to lose their view. Then the Sibelius statue followed by another church and marketplace. Leisure afternoon and off we go to St Petersburg.

4 June 2017

Started the day with a nice breakfast on board the ship. Our first excursion was to an ice bar located in a downtown hotel. We had a drink in an ice glass (they keep the ambient temperature at minus 5 degree). We finished up with a walking tour of Stockholm before getting back to the ship. We had a mandatory safety drill and set sail for Helsinki. Beautiful trip with an archipelago of small islands on the way. Afternoon tea and din we tonight at the Italian restaurant Manfredi's.

3 June 2017

Long plane rides but now onboard. Met Barbara and Marie on board. Big ship but brand new. Dinner was excellent but now we need some sleep.

2 June 2017

Awaiting our trip to Dulles and flights to Iceland and then Sweden. Final arrangements with our Rover Kenny sitter last night and we seem to be all packed up and ready to go. Got our boarding passes and because we are in Saga class, we got to use the Air France lounge which is good cause we got here so early.
